We are recruiting for a Bereavement Services Manager to manage and lead the Crematorium and Cemetery services for Boston Borough Council.
The Bereavement Services team, based at Boston Crematorium serves the town of Boston and immediate surrounding area, overseeing operations at Boston Crematorium, Boston Cemetery and Fosdyke Cemetery. Approximately 900 funeral services take place each year at the Crematorium, along with approximately 42 interments. The 53 acre site opened in 1855, with the addition of the Crematorium in 1966, and is well regarded and respected within the local community. The original part of the Cemetery is now designated and managed as a Local Wildlife Site.
We are seeking a highly motivated, compassionate individual, sensitive to the needs of the bereaved, to manage and lead on all operational and strategic aspects of the service, including cremations, interments, memorialisation, grounds maintenance and legal and technical aspects. This is a challenging but rewarding role, and the post holder will report to, and work closely with, the Asst. Director for Leisure & Local Services to provide a sensitive high quality service to the bereaved.
We're looking for a strong leader who can drive efficiency, harness new technologies, embed culture change, and identify opportunities to collaborate across the South & East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership and wider.
In this role you will:
Manage the day-to-day operation of cremation and burial services
Lead and develop a team of experienced staff
Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and health & safety requirements
Oversee budgets, resources, and service planning
Act as the Council’s Registrar for burials and cremations
Liaise with funeral directors, clergy, contractors, and the public
Handle sensitive and complex issues with empathy and compassion
You will also be responsible for developing business opportunities within the service, identifying efficiencies, and growing income generation capacity where appropriate.
This key Service Manager role provides an excellent opportunity to develop and take the service forward upon the imminent retirement of the current post holder. Future challenges include major investment in plant and equipment due to proposed changes to Process Guidance Notes issued by Defra, and securing future burial space to continue provision within the Borough.
The ideal candidate will have management or supervisory experience, preferably within a cemetery or crematorium environment, and will ideally hold the diploma awarded by the Institute of Crematorium and Cemetery Management or be working towards that qualification. Other professional qualifications will be an advantage, such as the Certificate of Proficiency for Cremator Technicians. The successful candidate will manage a team of nine working within the Crematorium and Cemetery.
