Crynodeb

We are delighted to announce the further recruitment to our highly competitive General Surgery Clinical Fellow programme.

After the successful delivery of this programme over the last 3 years specifically designed to develop trainees ability to progress into training programmes, we are looking to appoint the next cohort of full time Clinical Fellows (CFs) to start in August 2025 on an initial 12-month contract.

Applicants are expected to have a major interest in a career in General Surgery. MRCS or equivalent is not essential but desirable and basic clinical surgical skills (FY2 or equivalent) should be demonstrated. We would expect the successful applicant to be able to perform at the level expected of a Day 1 Core Surgical Trainee.

Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and be eligible to work in the UK.

We do reserve the right to close this advertisement early if we receive a high volume of suitable applications.

The post potentially offers wide experience and training in all aspects of General Surgery. The post holder will work with a team of 12 experienced Consultant Surgeons supported by a team of 10 registrars, 3 SHOs and 7 FY1s. Depending on the applicant's area of interest there may be opportunity to gain specialist training in emergency surgery, colorectal or upper GI surgery.

The duties of the post include:

• Out-patient clinics – managing new and follow up patients independently, under supervision and teaching as required

• Operating – independently, under supervision, assisting and training as appropriate.

• Attendance at and participation in MDT meetings

• Daily ward rounds

• Supervision of junior surgical staff.

• Active participation in clinical audit, governance and research.

• Teaching of medical students and surgical trainees

• Pre and post operative care of admissions

• Participation in middle grade on call rota (currently working a 1 in 10 rota but subject to change).

Other Duties

The job description is not intended to be exhaustive but provide an indication of the range and complexity of the work to be undertaken. Other duties may need to be carried out in consultation with clinical colleagues and the designated Consultant.

Our values define who we are as #TeamUHD. They underpin everything we do now and in the future. They define how we treat our patients, visitors, and each other, our valued teammates and colleagues.

UHD are investing in services across the Trust, with many being transformed and developed following merger and the New Hospital Programme.

This means that some services may move site this year or next, either temporarily or long term. Recruiting Managers interviewing for this role will be happy to answer any specific questions at interview.

Please note if a role or service relocates as part of a planned move, excess mileage will not be reimbursed. Travel from home to the new work base will be classed as a normal commute. Any other changes will be managed under relevant Trust or national terms and conditions.

To understand the role in more detail please read the full job description and person specification documents which are attached to this advert.
