Applications are invited for appointment to the post of Consultant Respiratory / GIM Physician with a special interest in Interstitial Lung Disease. The post will be based within the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Royal Victoria Infirmary.



This is an 8.0 programmed activity (PA) post.



Currently there are 17 Consultant Respiratory Physicians at Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary, including the Chair of Respiratory Medicine, Newcastle University, and two Academic Clinical Lecturers/Honorary Consultants. The Department offers a full range of range of sub-specialty services including, tertiary services in: Cystic Fibrosis, Severe Asthma, Interstitial Lung Disease, Assisted Ventilation (NEAVS), Occupational Lung Disease and TB. In addition to specialist ILD care, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the inpatient and outpatient work of the department, teaching, and quality improvement.

This post will be based at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary. This is a busy respiratory department which specialises in all aspects of clinical respiratory including: interstitial lung disease, complex asthma, occupational lung disease, tuberculosis, lung cancer, pleural disease, assisted ventilation, COPD (including a ‘virtual ward’) and cystic fibrosis. The post holder will work closely with other consultants in the department but will be able to function at consultant level in ILD, general respiratory medicine and general internal medicine. Support for the other work of the department, the Respiratory Support Unit (RSU), Respiratory Procedures Unit (RPU) and for acute general medicine within the hospital will be expected.

· Provide expert opinions on patients with respiratory complaints, taking independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to the unit.

· To undertake clinical duties in such a way that meets with Directorate and Trust aims and objectives.

· Participate in the acute medicine (GIM) on-call rotas.

· The post holder will be aware of professional standards, the responsibility to undertake safe and ethical clinical practice and the importance of responding promptly to any circumstances which may result in increased clinical risk or adverse outcome.
