Summary

VolkerRail Major Projects is an expert in collaborative working through joint ventures and alliance schemes. Collaborative working agreements are a proven strategy for delivering large, complex railway projects, and through its strong relationships with other major contractors, VolkerRail Major Projects has helped to deliver several of the biggest rail projects over the last decade.

The mission of the TRU East Alliance is to transform the East of Leeds route allowing people to travel faster, more reliably and in greater comfort between the North's great cities. Providing passengers with more choice, more seats and better facilities on a safer, cleaner, more environmentally friendly railway.

The TRU East project is broken down into multiple overlapping projects. Project E1 which is currently in build and planned to complete in December 2024. With the remaining projects E2,3,4 and Shipley planned to complete in 2028. The project works include full new electrification between Leeds and York and include significant and complex renewals works at Neville Hill and Church Fenton. The works also include a new depot at Shipley, and line speed enhancement and Journey time improvement works along the route between Leeds and York.

Working within the TRUe Alliance as a valued member of our project commercial team and wider project delivery team. The Transpennine Route Upgrade works East of Leeds are being delivered by the TRUe Alliance, with circa £1bn of works expected to be delivered throughout the portfolio, offering an exciting opportunity to grow and progress your career

We are seeking a dynamic and competent individual who can effectively handle a significant package of works within a large-scale project, working alongside multiple stakeholders. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a high-impact project that will shape the future of rail travel in the region. Your primary responsibilities will revolve around managing the financial and commercial aspects of the projects. By collaborating with various stakeholders, you will contribute to the achievement of our objectives and the smooth operation of the alliance.

Other key duties will include:

  • Responsible for the briefing the discipline team on the requirements, Commercial and Contractual aspects of the Projects under your responsibility both at initial handover stage and on an ongoing basis where required.
  • Optimise contract turnover, profitability, and cash for the Contracts under your control.
  • Responsible for the administration of disciplines under your control including but not limited to reporting requirements and the production, timely submission, and negotiation of variations, claims and notices.
  • Responsible for the production and/or assurance of accurate monthly reports on a timely basis as required by the company and alliance in relation to contract performance, including cost value reconciliation.
  • Work with the discipline team to ensure the control of ongoing costs, budgets, cost to complete and outturn forecasts, ensuring appropriate budget control measures are in place.
  • Liaison with Alliance Commercial Leads / Project Managers to ensure any significant issues are identified and provide consideration as to the appropriate actions which are required to resolve the issue.
  • Ensure relationships with alliance partners and the alliance auditor are maintained throughout the lifecycle of a project inclusive of managing the alliance auditors' expectations in relation to final value.
  • Undertake line management duties for members of the commercial team, inclusive of motivating staff, performance management, communicating effectively and developing staff to meet business needs.
  • Responsible for the procurement and management of Subcontracts and Suppliers in accordance with the Commercial Manual whilst ensuring best value is achieved.
  • Support the company's work winning process and provide support for the development of new business.
  • Feedback of Contract performance to Work Winning to ensure lessons are captured.
  • Provide support to their Line Manager and the Finance Manager to set, review and monitor annual budgets whilst ensuring compliance with the Company's financial authority procedure.
  • Engaging and collaborating with multiple alliance partners, fostering a win-win approach for all participants.
  • Emphasising and exemplifying appropriate alliancing behaviours and "best for project" approaches to support successful program delivery for the benefit of all alliance members.

About you

Additionally, you will have the following experience/skill set:

  • Considerable and demonstrable experience in a commercial role is an essential requirement for this role.
  • Ideally be educated to degree level or equivalent in Quantity Surveying
  • Demonstrate client and supplier management
  • Demonstrate management of the interfaces within project teams
  • Proficient in MS office applications (Microsoft Word & Excel)
  • Influencing and negotiation skills
  • Ability to work effectively under time constraints and competing priorities
  • Be able to maintain good relationships with experienced managers and leaders.
  • Excellent communication, numeracy & literacy skills.
  • Analytical approach to problem solving
  • Full UK driving licence
