An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the gynaecology outpatients team as a Nurse Colposcopist at Calderdale and Huddersfield Foundation Trust (CHFT) to provide the very best care for women accessing our services and as a team work collaboratively to achieve this.

The postholder will be an accredited Nurse Colposcopist through the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP) and work in collaboration with other colposcopy healthcare professionals to give appropriate specialist advice, including support and education in relation to all colposcopy treatment and related issues.

Clinics are based at both Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Calderdale Royal hospital within our Gynaecology OPD which provide person centred care for women with a wide variety of gynaecological needs.

To improve standards of care and promote a seamless service within the multidisciplinary professional framework. This will be achieved through clinical practice, Colposcopy management, education, research and audit professional activities, considering directorate and corporate objectives and within clinical governance framework.

Independently perform colposcopic examinations in line with BSCCP standards.

CORE BEHAVIOURS AND SKILLS



· Communicates effectively within the clinical based multi-disciplinary team to contribute to the smooth running of the service.

· Communicates with patients and carers to ensure their active involvement in their Colposcopy visit and care.

· Continue to develop external network with peers to share good practice within the Colposcopy service.

· Liaise with other departments and disciplines, ie. GP’s, practise nurses, cytology laboratory, histopathology laboratory, Contractor Service Agency and GUM.

· Participate in the Colposcopy / Cytology / Histopathology Multi-disciplinary meetings (MDT) and prepare the case summaries used in the meeting.

· PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY



· To participate in the planning of and development of the Colposcopy service in association with the Lead Nurse Colposcopist and Lead clinician

· Acts in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Code of Conduct

· Works autonomously to manage own caseload of patients whilst working as part of a multidisciplinary team with the colposcopy service

· Recognise a situation that may be detrimental to health and wellbeing of the individual and takes appropriate action.

· The Nurse Colposcopist will be able to deal with complaints and incidents at departmental level, determining the necessary course of action and reporting this to the person with continuing responsibility for the department.

· Will be expected to interpret clinical information pertaining to Colposcopy autonomously apply this to ensure individual patient needs are met and a management plan formulated in conjunction with the NHSCSP guidelines.

· Support the leads of Colposcopy in acquisition and validation of data for the colposcopy service including the KC65

Responsibilities for patient and client care

· Demonstrates a high level of knowledge and skills and is able to put this into practice in the specialist area of Colposcopy.

· Is able to work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team to assess, plan, contribute to and support the delivery of patient care within the Colposcopy service.

· Ensure that appropriate teaching of patients and carers is an integral part of care delivery.

· Support the maintenance of the patients environment, which is conducive to the highest standards of care delivery.

Freedom to act

· Works independently in colposcopy within the NMC Professional Code of Conduct, National Health Service Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCP) and BSCCP guidelines.

· Takes every opportunity to maintain and improve professional knowledge, skills and competence to ensure the delivery of evidence based practice in line with the NMC’s Code of Conduct, local policies and guidelines.

· Contributes to Clinical Governance at an appropriate level.

· Contribute to the development of policies, procedures and guidelines within the Colposcopy service.

· Adheres to policies, procedures and guidelines, which govern practice at national and local level.

· Works within the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct and the Trust’s policies and procedures.

Education and Training

· Provide appropriate advice regarding health promotion and prevention of illness, specifically smoking cessation advice, cervical screening, contraception and sexual health.

· Provides education regarding Colposcopy and the management of cervical abnormalities.

· Has a regular responsibility for the education of patients, carers and colleagues.

· Contributes to the creation of supportive educational environment maximising opportunities for learning and developing resources for students, staff, patients and carers.

· Foster a culture of lifelong learning and continuous professional development both personally and within the directorate team.

Leadership and management

· Acts as a role model to demonstrate the highest professional standards and support the development of clinical expertise within the team.

· Manages a caseload of patients with low-grade and high grade diseases of the cervix.

Research and Development

· Participates in departmental audit / research as required and demonstrates a high level of commitment to these areas.

· Actively apply research findings relating to Colposcopy.

· Highlights areas for potential audit and actively contributes to the process at departmental level
