Speech & Language Therapist – Stroke and Older Persons Unit

Band 5

Full-time, Permanent

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist to join the Stroke and Ageing and Health in-patient service at Guy's and St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

You will be based at St Thomas' Hospital and will join a friendly and supportive team dedicated to delivering high-quality multidisciplinary care to adult inpatients with communication and/or swallowing deficits. You will be joining our existing team of 29.2 WTE SLTs and 1.4 WTE SLT assistants.

Suitable applicants will be passionate about working within stroke and neuro rehabilitation and dementia and frailty care. You will be flexible within a varied working day and enjoy a fast-paced working environment.Post-graduate dysphagia experience is desirable, however comprehensive in-house dysphagia training following the RCSLT Eating, Drinking and Swallowing competency schedule is available. Delivery of training will be a key component of this role, both within the SLT service and the wider Stroke and Ageing and Health teams. We are also looking at possible options to make this position rotational to include supporting stroke patients during the community-based part of the stroke pathway.

The post holder will be responsible for provision of a high-quality Speech and Language Therapy service to inpatients on the Older Persons Unit and the Stroke ward at St Thomas’ Hospital.





The service is able to offer you excellent supervision and support, with a strong emphasis on team working and protected CPD opportunities. We have regular team meetings, plus opportunities for continuing professional development through in-house training, clinical excellence networks and external courses.


• To assess, analyse, make a clinical diagnosis and deliver rehabilitative programmes of care for patients with complex disorders of communication and swallowing.

· To assess the patient’s, need for alternative / augmentative communication and work with them to establish the use of appropriate systems.

· To be a key Speech and Language Therapy resource for members of the Multidisciplinary Stroke Team in all aspects of patients’ care.

· To refer to and participate in the SLT led videofluoroscopy (VFS) clinic and develop skills via local competency training programmes under supervision. To participate in reporting VFS and ensure findings are communicated to the multidisciplinary team, including recommendations for management.

· To refer to and attend Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) examinations of appropriate patients, participate in reporting and ensure findings are communicated to the multidisciplinary team including recommendations for management.

· To liaise closely with all members of the MDT, other professional staff, and speech and language therapy colleagues and attend weekly MDT meetings, case conferences, teaching sessions and board rounds as appropriate.

· To work closely with staff and carers to improve the communication and swallowing skills of patients and to offer guidance and training to staff and carers. To utilise a high level of inter personal skills to support patients and families in adapting to changed circumstances / impact of disorder.
