Lead Change. Empower Families. Grow Your Career.

Are you a passionate and experienced social worker ready to take the next step? Do you want to be part of a supportive team where your ideas are valued, your development is prioritised, and your impact is visible every single day?

At Blaenau Gwent, we’re offering more than a job – we’re offering a chance to be part of something transformative. As a Senior Social Work Practitioner in our Statutory Assessment Team, you’ll take on a pivotal leadership role in a forward-thinking service that places the voice of the child at the heart of everything we do. Whether you’re already working at senior level or are an experienced practitioner ready to progress, this is your opportunity to shape the future of children’s services in a local authority that truly supports its staff.

About the role

This is a rewarding and fast-paced role where no two days are the same. You’ll lead on the delivery of high-quality assessments, with the Statutory Assessment Team focusing on Section 47 enquiries and consent-based Integrated Assessments. Once assessments are completed, cases transfer to other teams—allowing you to focus on early, impactful intervention.

You’ll manage a complex caseload while supporting colleagues through mentoring, coaching, and day-to-day supervision. You’ll also step in for the Team Manager when needed, giving you valuable leadership experience in a nurturing and collaborative environment. Your input will help shape decision-making, promote reflective practice, and ensure our interventions are strengths-based, proportionate, and outcome-focused.

About you

You’re an experienced and confident social worker with a deep commitment to safeguarding, empowerment and relationship-based practice. You understand the complexities of working with families and have the knowledge, curiosity and empathy to navigate even the most challenging cases with professionalism and care.

You might already be in a senior role, or you may be an ambitious practitioner looking to take that next step. Either way, you bring excellent assessment and analytical skills, a proactive attitude, and the ability to make sound, child-centred decisions. You’re passionate about promoting positive change and enabling families to identify their strengths and build resilience.

Most importantly, you’re a natural leader who thrives in a team environment. You’re ready to mentor, support and inspire colleagues while contributing to the development of a service that prioritises integrity, partnership and continuous learning. You believe in doing the right thing, even when it’s hard—and you want to work somewhere that believes in you.

About us

Our Children’s Services are undergoing exciting transformation, and the Statutory Assessment Team is right at the forefront. This is your chance to contribute to an evolving model of social work designed to improve the way we engage with families, reduce caseload pressure, and provide earlier, more meaningful support.

You’ll be part of a tight-knit, supportive team of experienced social workers, support workers, and managers who genuinely care about each other’s wellbeing. We’re big believers in reflective practice, peer support and psychologically informed supervision—because we know that social workers do their best work when they feel valued and supported.

We also recognise that our employees are our greatest asset, which is why we offer a supportive and inclusive work environment, along with fantastic benefits to help you succeed:

Competitive Salary:
We value your experience and expertise and offer a highly competitive salary package.

Local Government Pension Scheme:
Enjoy peace of mind with our excellent pension benefits.

Ongoing Learning & Development:
Take advantage of training and development opportunities to enhance your career.

Generous Annual Leave:
Benefit from a substantial leave allowance to support your work-life balance.

Supportive Team Environment:
Work within a collaborative and inclusive culture that values your contributions.

Thorough pre-employment screening is undertaken during the recruitment process. The post holder will be required to complete an application for a Disclosure of Criminal Records.

This position requires a Professional Registration, please refer to the Person Specification for further details.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. A comprehensive
