Summary
The Department of General Surgery at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant in Emergency General Surgery with a subspecialty interest in bariatric surgery. This is a 10 Programmed Activity (PA) substantive post, comprising 8 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). While primarily based at St Mary’s Hospital, occasional clinical commitments at other sites within the Trust may be required.
St Mary’s Hospital is a designated Major Trauma Centre, and the post includes participation in the emergency general surgery on-call rota on a 1:8 basis, subject to departmental needs. The appointee will contribute to the ongoing development of effective emergency surgical pathways, with a particular focus on supporting the Trust’s four-hour target performance and ambulatory care services.
The successful candidate will be fully independent and proficient in bariatric surgery, including complex revision procedures and laparoscopic bile duct exploration. In addition, applicants must demonstrate competency in general, benign upper gastrointestinal (GI), and bariatric surgery in both elective and emergency settings.
A post-Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) fellowship in bariatric and benign upper GI surgery, along with prior consultant-level experience, is essential.
The post holder will;
• · Provide high-quality care to surgical patients in line with Trust standards.
• · Maintain GMC specialist registration and clinical competencies.
• · Attend all agreed clinical sessions and participate in direct patient care.
• · Involve patients in decision-making and respond to their views.
• · Support and deliver high-quality teaching to medical students and healthcare staff.
• · Act as an educational supervisor and participate in appraisals and training accreditation.
• · Contribute to translational research and comply with research governance protocols.
• · Drive clinical efficiency, quality outcomes, and operational performance.
• · Support financial management initiatives including cost-saving measures.
• · Oversee junior doctor rotas, leave planning, and recruitment processes.
• · Ensure compliance with working time regulations and appropriate cover arrangements.
• · Participate in job planning, team objectives, and service improvement initiatives.
