AT AK Teaching we are looking for compassionate and resilient SEMH Learning Support Assistants (LSA) and Teaching Assistants to support in an Alternative Provision in Middlesbrough. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a genuine difference in the lives of young people with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
As an SEMH LSA/TA, you will work closely with students who may face challenges related to their emotional well-being and behaviour. Your role will involve providing tailored support, promoting positive behaviour, and helping students develop coping strategies to overcome barriers to learning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support students with SEMH needs on a 1:1 or small group basis, both inside and outside the classroom.
- Assist teachers in delivering engaging and inclusive lessons.
- Implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behaviour management strategies.
- Foster positive, trusting relationships with students to support their social and emotional development.
- Monitor student progress and report observations to teaching staff and parents/carers.
- Assist with personal care and provide physical support if required.
- Contribute to creating a safe and supportive learning environment, encouraging resilience and self-confidence.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with young people with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour, or additional needs.
- A calm, patient, and empathetic approach to supporting vulnerable learners.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain resilient and positive in challenging situations.
- Relevant qualifications in Education, Psychology, Social Work, or related fields (desirable but not needed).
- An enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one).
- Qualifications in SEN support or Behaviour support such as Team Teach (or willingness to obtain the qualifications)
