Applications are invited for a 10PA Locum Consultant in either Paediatric Haematology or Paediatric Oncology at Nottingham University Hospitals. The current vacancy reflects an expansion post in paediatric haematology but due to a shortage in this speciality we are considering an interim 12m locum post for applicants from either a haematology or oncology background. There is flexibility around precise duties based on the experience of the applicant but the current priorities are for leukaemia and haemoglobinopathies. It may particularly suit either an oncologist looking for their first post in a supportive team or someone awaiting a CESR application.
Our East Midlands Children’s and Young Person’s Integrated Cancer Service (EMCYPICS) is a two site principal treatment centre for malignant haematology based across Nottingham and Leicester and takes approximately 140 new malignant patients each year. The post is Nottingham based, but with links via a shared MDT. Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is commissioned as a Specialist Haemoglobinopathies Team (SHT) and is part of the East Midlands Sickle & Thalassemia network (EMSTN). We are also a Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre. Our inpatient unit houses a teenage cancer trust area, adjacent daycare facilities with a theatre room and access to paediatric intensive care on the same corridor. We care for patients post autologous stem cell transplant in partnership with Sheffield who deliver the stem cell treatment.
The successful applicant will work as part of the consultant team to provide inpatient care to the haematology and oncology service on a 1 in 7.5 service week basis as well as having specific responsibilities for clinical and where appropriately experienced laboratory work within the Paediatric Haematology Service. The main clinical responsibility will be for leukaemia with additional supported duties within haemoglobinopathies and potentially other clinical areas based on experience and interests. The post is for 10PAs but applications from those wishing to consider job share or more flexible arrangements are also invited.
It is essential that applicants have specific training in either paediatric haematology or oncology, are fully registered with the GMC with entry to the specialist register for haematology or oncology expected within 6 months or a CESR expected within 1 year. Please refer to the job description for full details. Additional enquiries and visits are very welcome.
The successful applicant will become part of a friendly and collaborative team of 8 consultant haematologists and oncologists. We have strong links with the University of Nottingham, with two team members having academic appointments. There are currently 3 consultants covering the haematology service with one lead each for leukaemia, haemostasis and red cell disorders. We also have a haemostasis consultant who looks after children as well as adults with bleeding disorders. The wider paediatric team is very welcoming and sociable and includes general paediatrics, nephrology, rheumatology, metabolic , gastroenterology, intensive care and interests in cardiology. We have excellent links with paediatric surgery with dedicated theatre time for line insertions and have twice weekly dedicated bone marrow/intrathecal lists. Nottingham and the surrounding area is a hidden gem, being a beautiful yet affordable place to live with outstanding nearby schools and excellent transport links to other major cities.
Please refer to job description & personal specification for further information regarding the post.
