Our Client is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Employment Lawyer to join their dynamic Legal Services team. This is a senior role, responsible not only for handling a complex and varied caseload with minimal supervision but also for providing leadership and expert legal advice across the Council.
You will play a key role in managing a group of lawyers within identified work areas, contributing to the strategic direction of Legal Services and supporting organisational development through effective resource management and legal expertise.
Key Responsibilities:



Provide high-quality, timely, and effective legal advice to the County Council, its officers, members, and committees.


Manage a varied and demanding caseload within employment law, delivering innovative legal solutions.


Undertake or manage advocacy where required.


Lead, supervise, and motivate a team of lawyers; provide guidance and ensure development of junior staff.


Support the Head of Legal Services in operational planning, policy development, and service improvement.


Help reduce reliance on external legal counsel by developing internal expertise.


Support the Monitoring Officer with investigations related to illegality or procedural default.


Deliver training and updates on legal and procedural developments to staff across the Council.


Manage legal resources effectively, ensuring cost-effective service delivery.


Monitor and influence legal spend, especially regarding external legal commissioning.


Participate in strategic planning for Legal Services.


Lead or support key projects, business process reviews, and change initiatives to improve service delivery.



Qualifications


Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of CILEX qualified to practise in England and Wales.


Current practising certificate (or eligible to apply for one).



Essentials:


Significant post-qualification experience in employment law and public sector legal work.


Experience in supervising staff and managing team workloads.


Experience of advocacy and presenting cases before employment tribunals or similar forums.




Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making abilities.


Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


Effective leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills.


Proven ability to work collaboratively and influence at a senior level.


Familiarity with Lexcel standards and electronic case management systems.
