Ready for a New Challenge? Bring Your Expertise to the Heart of Local Democracy
Full training provided to help you thrive in Democratic Services.
Are you passionate about using your skills to make a real impact in local government and local democracy? This could be the role for you.
Erewash is investing in its staff to build an inclusive, innovative workplace where you can lead, influence, and make an impact — locally and beyond.
About the team
Join our small, dedicated Democratic, Electoral and Civic Services Team - the engine behind transparent, effective decision-making at Erewash Borough Council.
We work closely with councillors and colleagues across the council to support good governance, ensure legal compliance, and build community confidence in decision-making. We are also passionate about promoting democratic values in schools and the wider community.
About the role
We are looking for a Senior Democratic Services Officer in our proactive and friendly team. Ideally you will have experience of working in a local authority democratic services team but if you are an experienced professional with transferrable skills and a willingness to learn our procedures and relevant legislation quickly, this could be the job for you.
In this role, you will play a key part in delivering high-quality democratic services, supporting council meetings, civic duties and constitutional processes. Confidence in applying legal and procedural knowledge is important—but if you are new to local government, we will help you get there.
As well as the core responsibilities, you will take the lead on exciting projects that enhance how we deliver democratic services and strengthen our governance. You will join the wider Law and Governance team role in inspiring young people by promoting democracy in local schools.
Familiarity with the Modern.Gov committee management system is a bonus, but it’s not essential. What matters most is your attention to detail, organisational skills, and enthusiasm to learn and grow in a governance-focused role.
What We are Looking For
We are seeking a proactive and knowledgeable professional with:
• Experience of working at a senior level in an administrative setting
• Strong organisational skills with excellent written and verbal communication
• Confidence in delivering high-quality work and seeing projects through
• Ability to juggle complex workloads and shifting priorities
• A proactive mindset with a flair for innovation and service improvement
• A collaborative approach and confidence in advising a range of stakeholders
Why Join Us?
• Be part of a small, friendly, and supportive team
• Make a real impact in your community
• Enjoy flexible working arrangements and a strong work-life balance
• Access to professional development and training opportunities
Additional Information
• Politically Restricted Post: This is a politically restricted post under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989, which imposes limitations on the political activities of the post holder.
• Evening Meetings: You will be required to attend some evening meetings (from 6.30 pm).
Benefits of Working for Us
In addition to a competitive salary, you will also have access to:
• Generous annual leave package – 29 days annual leave (rising to 33 days after 5 years’ continuous service) plus 8 bank holidays a year
• New Flexi Time scheme
• Free workplace car parking within the Borough
• Opportunities for training, learning and continuous professional development
• Family friendly flexible and hybrid working policies available
• Option to join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) plus access to a salary sacrifice scheme for added voluntary pension contributions
• Discounted leisure membership with the Fit for Work scheme
• Access to the VIVUP employee benefits discount and salary sacrifice scheme
The closing date for applications is 10th August 2025 at midnight.
