Summary of the Role:
Age Concern Tyneside South (ACTS) is looking for an enthusiastic and community-driven individual to join our Connected Caring Service as a Carer Support and Community Engagement Worker. This important role helps unpaid adult carers across South Tyneside to connect with services, support networks, and local opportunities that promote wellbeing and independence.
The postholder will work directly in local communities, creating safe, welcoming spaces for carers and those they care for to meet, access information, and take part in tailored activities. You’ll be responsible for developing and delivering outreach sessions, informal groups, community stalls and events that reflect the needs of local carers, including those who may be isolated, underrepresented or not yet self-identified as carers.
A key part of the role involves identifying hidden carers and supporting them to access early help, avoid carer breakdown, and improve their overall wellbeing. You will also work with former carers and people with lived experience to establish peer-led initiatives that can continue long-term, with support from ACTS.
You’ll be expected to build strong relationships with individuals, local organisations, community leaders, health and social care partners, and statutory services, ensuring that carers are embedded in the life of their communities. This includes liaising with Young Carer services to support a smooth transition into adult services and championing the voices of carers who may face additional barriers (e.g., those from ethnic minority backgrounds, LGBTQ+ communities, and male carers).
The role requires excellent people skills, creativity, and a passion for inclusion. You will be responsible for maintaining accurate records on ACTS’ systems, contributing to evaluations and reports, and helping with digital content to promote services online.
Key Tasks Include:
• Designing and delivering carer engagement and outreach plans aligned with local need.
• Establishing and supporting regular community-based groups, activities, and drop-ins.
• Promoting carer visibility through information stands, networking events, and local forums.
• Encouraging carers to prioritise their own wellbeing and access relevant support.
• Supporting and empowering carers and ex-carers to take ownership of peer-led activity.
• Working in partnership with community organisations to avoid duplication and increase sustainability.
• Liaising with Young Carers services to support smooth pre-transition and transition planning.
• Supervising volunteers, students, and apprentices involved in service delivery.
• Monitoring and evaluating all engagement activity using appropriate systems.
• Delivering training or awareness sessions where required.

What We’re Looking For:
We’re seeking someone with a strong understanding of the voluntary and community sector, and at least two years’ experience in community engagement, group facilitation or support work. You should be confident working independently and on the ground in neighbourhoods, as well as collaborating with a broad range of stakeholders.
You’ll need to be organised, IT-literate, and committed to equality and inclusion. Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends is essential.
