Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust is an integrated care organisation. We are dedicated to improving the lives of local people, to maintaining an outstanding reputation for teaching and education, and to embedding innovation and research. We employ over 8,000 people and spend around £430 million of public money, largely drawn from the Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) which serve the Sandwell and West Birmingham areas. The ICBs and the Trust are responsible for the care of 530,000 local people from across North-West Birmingham and all the towns within Sandwell. The National Poisons Information Service (NPIS) provides advice to health professionals on all aspects of clinical toxicology, via a computerised database (TOXBASE), by telephone and in correspondence. The Birmingham Unit is one of four regional NPIS bases and contributes to the provision of a 24/7 service. The SWB clinical toxicology, alcohol and drug (TOAD) service at MMUH provides state of the art holistic inpatient and outpatient assessment and management for patients with all forms of poisoning and /or alcohol and drug related ill health, in collaboration with the award winning nurse-led Drug and Alcohol Care Team. An elective admission service for alcohol detoxification is also offered. The toxicology, alcohol and drug service at MMUH has a strong research track record and is committed to improving the care of patients with poisoning and alcohol and drug addiction through evidenced based research. It has a close working relationship with the regional Toxicology laboratory based at the City Health Campus.
