The Role;
We are looking for a passionate and experienced Senior Mental Health Adviser to lead and oversee the college’s mental health and counselling services. This new role has been created in response to the growing demand for high-quality mental health support across Newham College London.


The postholder will manage a team of Mental Health Advisers and external counsellors, ensuring all students — including young people and adult learners — have timely and equitable access to mental health support. The role will also drive the development and implementation of a whole-college mental health strategy, strengthen internal collaboration, and foster key partnerships with external agencies


Key responsibilities;


Act as the college’s lead specialist in mental health, managing a caseload of students.
Line manage Mental Health Advisers and coordinate external counselling services.
Provide expert guidance and support to students experiencing mental health difficulties.
Offer consultation and advice to staff on supporting students with mental health needs.
Develop and deliver mental health awareness training and CPD for staff.
Monitor referrals, maintain accurate case records and data for reporting purposes.
Work closely with Safeguarding, Welfare, Inclusive Learning, and Tutorial teams.
Contribute to the development and delivery of the college’s Mental Health Strategy.
Represent the college at borough-wide and sector events related to mental health and wellbeing.
Support whole-college events, open days, and workshops promoting mental health.

Our Ideal candidate should have the following qualifications, skills and experience.


Essential:


Professional qualifications in a Mental Health-related field or equivalent experience
Significant experience providing mental health or counselling support to young people and adults
Strong understanding of safeguarding practices in an educational or support setting
Excellent interpersonal skills with a non-judgmental, supportive, and empathetic approach
Ability to manage a team, coordinate services, and prioritise workload effectively
Confident in using digital systems and maintaining accurate records
Experience of promoting positive mental health and delivering awareness/training sessions
Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, with the ability to relate to a diverse student body
A sound understanding of confidentiality, professional boundaries, and ethical practice

Desirable:


Experience working in an educational setting
Degree in a relevant subject area
Familiarity with local authority and borough-wide mental health partnerships

Safeguarding of Children and Vulnerable Adults

The salary for this position is inclusive of London weighting. Please note that it is Newham College’s policy to offer all roles at the entry point of the salary scale advertised. However, based on your qualifications and experience, we may offer a higher starting salary within the specified salary range.
