The Aviation Resilience team are responsible for ensuring the UK aviation sector are appropriately prepared to mitigate and respond effectively to major incidents that have a severe impact on the sector, such as winter weather, IT issues repatriation events and industrial action. This is done through active risk monitoring, horizon scanning for potential new risks and possible mitigations, developing and maintaining response plans, working with the aviation industry and cross-Government partners to improve resilience and learning from past incidents. The postholder will need to work with other divisions across both aviation directorates, the DfT Transport Security Operations Centre and other Government Departments and industry.

The work is diverse, giving the post holder an opportunity to develop a wide range of skills whilst working on projects which clearly align with the organisational priorities. The responsive nature of the team’s work has created a flexible, co-operative team which enables post‑holders to develop innovative solutions, take ownership of projects and develop their leadership skills, often working to challenging timescales.

The post holder will lead on several civil contingency portfolio areas that have potential to disrupt the flow of the aviation sector. This can range from severe weather, volcanic eruption, drone incursion, repatriation, events. The responsibilities of the post-holder will include working closely with aviation operations and resilience leads to develop effective contingency and response plans.

Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Manage and be responsible for team operations, including team inbox.
  • Develop and maintain aviation resilience team response plan for a specific portfolio area.
  • Contribute to Departmental crisis response to major transport incidents with significant sector impacts.
  • Support written and verbal briefings for seniors and Ministers on aviation contingency plans and response.
  • Represent the aviation industry and provide aviation resilience advice in cross‑Government crisis response forums.
  • Work with industry resilience experts to ensure the sector has effective contingency plans for high impact events, clear line of communications and reporting arrangements for response to incidents.
  • Manage relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external. This will require engagement with senior leadership, OGDs and external bodies.
  • The post has a high degree of autonomy and the holder must be comfortable operating within a broad strategic direction in pursuit of continuously improving aviation sector resilience and teams response performance.
  • Part of aviation resilience on-call rota.
