JOB DETAILS Job Title: PCN Phlebotomist Location: Ixworth Surgery Accountable to: Senior Management Reports to: Lead Practice Nurse Working hours: Part Time (24 Hours) JOB SUMMARY Ixworth Surgery, together with three other practices, Woolpit Health Centre, Botesdale Health Centre and Stanton Surgery, form the Blackbourne Primary Care Network. The practices within Blackbourne PCN are located in West Suffolk, close by to Bury St Edmunds, and provide care for patients in rural communities. Ixworth Surgery, as part of Blackbourne PCN, are seeking a reliable and professional Phlebotomist to join our primary care team. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Lead Practice Nurse and within a friendly, caring multidisciplinary team. The post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture on patients as requested by the clinical team, ensuring that high quality blood samples are collected, labelled, and handled in line with clinical guidelines. In addition to phlebotomy duties, they will support the nursing team as needed and within the scope of their practice, contributing to the smooth and efficient delivery of patient care within the surgery. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: The following are the core responsibilities of the PCN Phlebotomist. Obtain informed patient consent prior to collecting blood samples, ensuring understanding and cooperation. Carry out venepuncture and skin puncture procedures to obtain blood samples. Ensure all specimens are correctly identified and accurately labelled. Prepare and process samples for laboratory analysis in accordance with practice protocols. Maintain clear and up-to-date patient records and documentation. Comply with infection prevention and control measures, as well as health and safety standards. Deliver compassionate and reassuring care, addressing patient concerns and ensuring comfort during procedures. Work collaboratively with clinical colleagues to support patient assessment, diagnosis, and ongoing care. Support and participate in the delivery of health promotion and wellbeing initiatives, including opportunistic interventions. Maintain a clean, tidy, and well-organised working environment to ensure efficiency and safety. This list in not exhaustive and is subject to change depending on clinical priorities. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels. Other Responsibilities: Act as a chaperone when required, ensuring patient dignity, safety, and comfort. Participate in surgery and PCN initiatives aimed at enhancing service delivery and improving patient care. Support and take part in shared learning activities within the practice to contribute to continuous improvement and team development. Contribute to practice audits as directed, supporting quality assurance and service improvement efforts. Assist with the monitoring and ordering of stock related to phlebotomy supplies and equipment. Escalate any concerns about a patients condition or wellbeing to a clinician promptly. Health & Safety: The post-holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others health, safety and security as defined in the Practice Health & Safety Policy, to include: Using personal security systems within the workplace according to Practice guidelines Wearing of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards Reporting potential risks identified Personal/Professional Development: The post-holder will participate in any training programme implemented by the Practice as part of this employment, such training to include: Participation in an annual individual appraisal, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development Taking responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work Quality: The post-holder will strive to maintain quality within the Practice, and will: Alert other team members to issues of quality and risk Assess own performance and take accountability for own actions, either directly or under supervision Contribute to the effectiveness of the team by reflecting on own and team activities and making suggestions on ways to improve and enhance the teams performance Work effectively with individuals in other agencies to meet patients' needs Effectively manage own time, workload and resources Communication: The post-holder should recognize the importance of effective communication within the team and will strive to: Communicate effectively with other team members Communicate effectively with patients and carers Recognize peoples needs for alternative methods of communication and respond accordingly Contribution to the Implementation of Services: The post-holder will: Apply Practice policies, standards and guidance Discuss with other members of the team how the policies, standards and guidelines will affect own work Participate in audit where appropriate Working within your professional code of conduct (GPhC) Disclosure and Barring Service Check Please note this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
