Summary
Clinical Fellow F2 - ST1/2 General Medicine (Fixed Term contract till 4th August 2026)
The Great Western Hospital opened in 2002 following a move from the Princess Margaret Hospital elsewhere in Swindon. The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides acute hospital services (at the Great Western Hospital) and some community health services. At the Great Western Hospital we have all of the facilities you would expect to find in a busy general hospital including an Emergency Department, delivery suite, a full range of diagnostics tests such as X-ray, MRI and CT scans, outpatient clinics and 21 inpatient wards. We provide these services in a very modern environment ensuring patient have privacy and dignity throughout their care.
Our priority for our patients, whether cared for in hospital or in the community is to provide safe, high quality health services and we have an impressive track record on issues such as patient safety and infection control.
The post of a Clinical Fellow F2 and ST1/2 is both challenging yet rewarding; you will be looking after patients from when they are admitted to the hospital to the final discharge stage. The successful candidates will be working in a mixture of General and Geriatric Medicine, specifically for our General Medicine patients.
Under the direction of Ward based consultant you will undertake the below duties, these are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.
• Take a history and examine a patient
• Identify and synthesize problems
• Prescribe safely
• Keep an accurate and relevant medical record
• Complete discharge summaries in a timely fashion, and be responsible for the describing of discharge medication.
• Manage time and clinical priorities effectively
• Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues
• Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care
• Consultant ward rounds will be a useful opportunity for doctors to discuss management plans and treatment options.

Continuing Professional Development and Continuing Medical Education:
There is an active Post Graduate Medical Education programme based in the Postgraduate Centre. There is a regular programme of tutorials, seminars, lunchtime and evening meetings. A full range of library services is available at the hospital and through that library from the Regional Library Service. Account will be taken by the Trust of emerging recommendations for Continuing Medical Education and Continuous Professional Development by the relevant Royal Colleges and other professional bodies.
While this is not formally recognized as a training post we would expect post holders to gain similar experience to those on recognised training posts and use this as a springboard to achieve a competitive post in the future. You will be encouraged to discuss your career aspirations with your supervising consultant at the commencement of your post.
