Step Into a Future in Food Safety – Funded Training & Real-World Experience.
Are you passionate about food safety, and want to make a real difference in your community? Looking to build a career in Environmental Health with full training and support? This is your chance!
We’re looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Environmental Health team as a Trainee Technical Officer in our Food Health and Safety team. This is a fully funded training opportunity where you’ll gain hands-on experience while working towards a Level 4 Certificate in Food Safety and Food Legislation and undertaking the CIEH Competency Development Portfolio.
As part of this exciting opportunity, you’ll study for the Level 4 Certificate in Food Safety and Food Legislation at the University of Birmingham - with dedicated paid time away from work to attend the university as required and to fully focus on your professional development.
What You’ll Do:
• Support food safety inspections, investigations, and sampling activities.
• Assist with handling complaints and monitoring business compliance.
• Learn from experienced Environmental Health Officers and contribute to real-world public protection work.
• Help maintain high standards of hygiene and food safety across the borough.
What You’ll Gain:
• A nationally recognised qualification in food safety.
• On-the-job training and mentoring from a supportive team.
• A clear pathway into a professional career in Environmental Health.
• Experience of assisting local businesses to meet legal requirements and protect public health.
• Opportunities to develop your skills in regulation, enforcement, and public health.
What We’re Looking For:
• GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grades 9-4/A*-C in English, Maths, and a Science.
• A genuine interest in food safety, health and safety, or regulatory services.
• Strong communication, teamwork, and IT skills.
• A full UK driving licence and willingness to work flexibly.
Please note:
Due to the nature of the role, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the post holder to meet a certain level of physical fitness.
This is necessary to safely and effectively carry out duties such as accessing and inspecting a range of premises, walking across uneven terrain, standing for extended periods, bending, kneeling, climbing stairs or ladders in varied weather conditions. This requirement is a proportionate means of achieving the legitimate aim of ensuring public and employee safety and service delivery.
Why Join Us?
• Be part of a friendly, forward-thinking council.
• Make a positive impact on public health and safety.
• Enjoy excellent training, development, and career progression opportunities.

In addition to a competitive salary, you will also have access to:
• Generous annual leave package – 29 days annual leave (rising to 33 days after 5 years’ continuous service) plus 8 bank holidays a year
• Free workplace car parking within the Borough
• Opportunities for training, learning and continuous professional development
• Family friendly flexible and hybrid working policies available
