To provide compassionate, high-quality support to patients attending the Gall Bladder Clinic and patients within the Surgical Assessment Unit. The post holder will assist registrar, registered nurses and clinicians in delivering safe, efficient, and person-centred care, ensuring smooth patient flow and a positive experience throughout the clinic journey.

The Care Support Worker will:

· Welcome and prepare patients for assessment, investigations, and procedures

· Support clinicians during consultations, including chaperoning and note-taking as required

· Ensure accurate documentation of patient information and care activities

· Maintain cleanliness and readiness of clinic rooms and equipment

· Escort patients to and from diagnostic areas (e.g. ultrasound )

· Monitor stock levels and replenish clinical supplies

· Provide reassurance and emotional support to patients and families

· Report any concerns or changes in patient condition to the registered nurse

Act in a manner that upholds privacy, dignity, respect and confidentiality of patients and colleagues.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300, providing inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and the continued upgrading of existing areas ensures the Trust now has a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit facilities.

A new Urgent Emergency Care Centre was opened in March 2023. The two-storey development has significantly improved emergency care facilities and capacity and has provided almost 5,000 square metres of additional clinical space.

Personal Care Duties

• Welcome and orientate patients, carers, relatives, and other visitors to the ward/department always

demonstrating care and compassion.

• Provide support to the registered practitioner, and where appropriate, other members of the ward /

department clinical team as required.

• Participate with emergencies i.e. cardiac arrest, patient falls and patients with a rapidly deteriorating

condition.

• Undertake transfer/escort of patients from one area to another within scope of practice and after

appropriate delegation from the registered practitioner.

• Assist in the Last Offices for deceased patients ensuring that all religious and cultural wishes are

adhered with.

• Assist in the maintenance of the patient’s individual hygiene requirements, including supporting/

undertaking fundamental patient care, such as washing, dressing, skin care, oral care, hair care, nail

care etc. Ensure any concerns or changes in the patients' condition are reported to the registered

practitioner.

• Assist in the prevention of pressure ulcers, complete required documentation and report any

concerns or changes in skin integrity to the registered practitioner.

• Ensure safe and effective use of equipment and other aids deployed to assist patient movement and

mobility e.g. walking aids, hoists etc.



Nutrition and Hydration

• Assist in the preparation of patients prior to them receiving meals and beverages, providing assistance

with feeding / drinking where appropriate.

• Correctly record and monitor dietary and fluid intake of patients, informing registered practitioners

of progress and / or any difficulties relating to dietary / fluid intake experienced by the patient.



Communication

• Communicate effectively and maintain good relationships with patients, relatives, and other

healthcare practitioners.

• Ensure that consent is obtained prior to delivering all aspects of patient care.

• Undertake duties as directed by the registered practitioner in relation to all verbal and written

communications, ensuring messages and communications are passed to other team members, as

required.

• Listen to and value the views of patients and their relatives and / or on their experience and discuss

this with registered practitioners to improve care and patient experience.

• Actively support and assist in alleviating distress and anxiety for patients and carers in line with their

personal beliefs and preferences whilst in hospital, seeking support from a registered practitioner

when required.
