Senior Healthcare Assistant

Department: Emergency Department

Band 2/3 pro rata if part-time

Hours: 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

The Emergency Department (ED) are currently looking for FIVE new Healthcare Assistants. The role of the ED is to treat patients who have serious medical conditions, life-threatening illnesses/injuries and limb-threatening problems by providing a 24-hour care to an average of 240 patients every day. Therefore, you will need to always be pro-active, alert and ready for anything.

As a Healthcare Assistant in the Emergency Department, you will work collaboratively with Staff Nurses, Consultants and ambulance staff.

We are looking for pro-active, enthusiastic, compassionate individuals who understand the importance of excellence in health and safety and who enjoy working as part of a team.

You must be understanding of accurate documentation within the workplace, be self-motivated be wanting to improve patient lives and be caring at all times.

• Toassistthe senior nursing staff in ensuring that all clinical equipment is kept in good working order and ready for use.

• To promote the importance of good clinical practice throughout the department, acting as an ambassador forhigh standardsand good patient care at all times.

• The ability to be involved in influencing change to promote an effective environment for patients and staff.

• Supportand trainnew staffwith internal training and the induction process.

• To be involved in continuous development in keeping up to date knowledge on the healthcare assistant’s role.

• Support the use of competency assessments in the practice area.

• Provide assessmentof Juniorhealthcare assistants competency documents and care certificate.

• Toassistall team members asrequiredin the direct delivery of patient care. Undertake/ assist inpersonal care duties for patientswhenrequired.Ensure privacy and dignity ismaintained.

• Utiliseappropriate movingand handling aids to reduce the risk of injury to the patient and themselves.Ensure the safe transfer of patients to Wards and Departments using trolleys and wheelchairs which require steering and manipulation.

• To have knowledge of clinical observations, glucose monitoring and urinalysis, allrequiringthe use of equipment or toolsandrequirean understanding of the correct escalation process, reportingpatient conditions to a senior member of staff.

• Toassistin the induction ofnew staffwithin the department,demonstratingduties to new starters. Lead in setting an example to new starters to ensure safe and effective care.

• To organise own daily workload, adjusting and prioritising appropriately as thedepartment actively dictates.
• Communicate factual informationto patientsregardingtheir condition within your clinical remit. Patients may have barriers to understanding such as a physical or mental disability, including dementia and so information will need to be delivered with tact, empathy, and sensitivity.
• To use advanced communication skillsto encourage patients to engage and undertake activities of daily living/procedures.
• To ensure that patients, relatives needs are met in a courteous, helpful, and compassionate manner.
• To ensure all visitors to the department are dealt with in a courteous and helpful manner
