About Joe
Joe is a young man described by those people that love him and know him best as ‘funny and cheeky’. Joe has a wicked sense of humour, and his mischievous laugh gives him away when he is thinking something cheeky. Joe is affectionate and loving, and it is well worth taking the time to get to know him. When he’s built trust in you, you can support him to unlock opportunities, which can lifechanging!
Joe is non-verbal, though extremely communicative through his extensive use of Makaton. Joe is keen to support others to understand him, though can get frustrated when his wants and needs are not understood. Joe is autistic, has a learning disability and bipolar disorder, and experiences anxiety. Much of Joe’s anxiety stems from previous traumatic experiences, so a trauma informed approach is vital when supporting Joe and understanding his behaviours which can be perceived as challenging.
Joe is in a hospital in Newcastle and will be moving back to Sussex to be near his family. Joe has a great relationship with his family, and they are very important to him. They visit and communicate on a regular basis.
Joe enjoys listening to music, swimming, going for walks and drives and spending time with his family. Joe enjoys accessing the community, including visits to Starbucks and going out to eat in a quiet place. Joe would love to sit in to eat at McDonalds one day. Joe needs a consistent, supportive and confident team to support him to try new activities.
