Leadership / Governance / Training roles Each trainee is allocated responsibility for a specific role key to the running of a safe, efficient unit. Developing these skills is intrinsic to surgical training. This is for a defined period (6 months 1 year) and allocated at consultant level. It is expected that trainees will rotate through a number of these posts. These roles include the following: MDT meetings (including with regional centres) Mangement of the Acute Board Rota administration Pre-operative care Data entry / note keeping/ recording of complications. Post-operative infection (root cause analysis for each deep wound infection) Education Clinical Governance Research and Training The Department has an international reputation in research. Ample opportunity exists in liaison with local colleagues to develop research interests. The post holder accepts that he / she will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with his / her colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and in particular that juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
