An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join the world-renowned Power Electronics, Machines and Control Institute (PEMC) at the University of Nottingham, where you will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of cutting-edge electrification technologies for power generation, marine, aerospace, and automotive applications.
This diverse role touches almost all aspects of the development of novel machines and topologies: from defining requirements and structuring complex problems to detailed mechanical design and simulations, managing manufacturing, system integration, test design, and delivering insightful data analysis and reports. You'll play a pivotal part in collaborations with researchers at Nottingham and leading industrial partners such as GKN, Cummins, Rolls-Royce, and Siemens.
About the Team
The PEMC institute has grown exponentially and now has over 200 members, 24 academics and circa 130 PhD students, researchers, and engineers. The group offers state-of-the-art facilities spanning 3500 m², capable of handling up to 5 MW for construction and testing. Our team is world leading in advanced electrical machines design, analysis, manufacturing, and testing. The role holder will become part of the team working in this state-of-the-art facility for advanced electrical machines for power generation, marine, aerospace and automotive industries.
About You
You should have a Mechanical / Aerospace / Automotive / Engineering qualification to BEng (2:1 level) or equivalent. The ability to work in, and lead, a team and interact & collaborate actively and professionally with industrial partners is essential. Here are some examples of the type of expertise we are looking for; however, this list is not exhaustive:
Proven concept and detailed design skills applied to complex mechanical systems.
Capability with at least one parametric 3D CAD package.
Creating detailed mechanical drawings to BS8888 (or similar) with GD&T.
Basic understanding of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and rotordynamics.
Design of mechanical systems from concept to manufacture, assembly and test.
