Croydon Health Services offers a truly integrated approach to paediatric services across our acute and community services. Supporting seamless pathways for children and young people between the hospital and their home for children requiring short-term admissions to those with long-term health needs.

Do you want to be part of our growing team at an exciting time? We have an opportunity for an experienced health care assistant to join the Paediatric Outpatient team as a Band 3. Working in this team you will be responsible for helping to facilitate efficient running of the paediatric outpatient clinics and will be part of a team of advanced health care assistants running the children's phlebotomy service.

1. To weigh and measure all children and babies attending as outpatients, recording the results on Cerner as well as clearly and accurately in the patients notes. The post holder will also be required to take observations as directed by the nursing and medical teams.

2. To obtain blood samples from children attending at the request of their local GP or attending an outpatient appointment. This may involve pacifying an upset or fearful child and / or their parents.

3. To remain up to date in venepuncture techniques and related techniques such as infection control, health and safety and manual handling.

4. To accurately identify requests and to label sample containers legibly with the required information according to current procedures.

5. To maintain an up to date knowledge of the blood tests performed by various departments and their appropriate bottles and containers.

6. To work autonomously and manage an appointment system, which at present time is recorded in a diary, for the patients referred by their GP. Ensuring that this information is recorded on the hospital system. Training will be given on how to use the ICE system for GP requests to print off blood forms.

7. Responsible for the maintenance of phlebotomy stock levels including checking of expiry dates for stock within the department.

8. To collect specimens using appropriate equipment and forms and to advise parents/carers in the collection of specimens at home

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust provide hospital and community services from a number of community and specialist clinics throughout Croydon. The Trust was formed on 1st August 2010 through the integration of Croydon Community Health Services and Mayday Healthcare NHS Trust. Around 4,100 staff provide services for a population of over 360,000 people who are relatively young with a high level of ethnic diversity.
Our main hospital site, Croydon University Hospital is one of the busiest in London. We’re also leading the way in providing more healthcare outside hospitals at clinics, specialist centres and in people’s homes. Our experienced district nursing teams, Allied Health Professionals and community matrons look after people of all ages across Croydon and our Children’s Hospital at Home cares for children with long-term conditions without them having to come to hospital.
Across the NHS everyone is working hard to meet growing demand and we’re no exception. But with the right people on board, we are rising to this challenge, putting our people in the driving seat, encouraging innovation and transforming our services to give local people the quality of care they deserve. Croydon Health Services puts a great deal of importance on education and training throughout the careers of all of our staff. As well as offering access to a range of core skills training and professional development.
