Sustained economic growth is the key to improving the prosperity of the country and the living standards of working people. Developing and implementing a new UK-wide Industrial Strategy is one of the government’s key priorities when it comes to driving forward growth across the UK.
The Industrial Strategy Unit is at the heart of the government’s mission for growth. It is the team responsible for delivering the Industrial Strategy alongside His Majesty’s Treasury (HMT), working to coordinate workstreams and ensure plans on Industrial Strategy are successfully delivered.
There are 2 roles available in the Industrial Strategy Unit (ISU). One will support delivering a programme of business engagement to support the Industrial Strategy. The other will support engagement and coordination of policy work with the devolved governments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (SWNI) as part of a partnership approach to implementation.
Published on 23 June 2025, our new Industrial Strategy is central to the Government’s Growth Mission. In October 2024 the Industrial Strategy Green Paper was published which sets out our vision for a modern Industrial Strategy. “Invest 2035” is a credible, 10-year plan to deliver the certainty and stability businesses need to invest in the high-growth sectors that will drive our growth mission. In doing so, the Industrial Strategy will create a pro-business environment and support high-potential clusters across the country.
Its objective is to drive growth: taking advantage of the UK’s unique strengths and untapped potential. This modern Industrial Strategy will enable the UK’s already world-leading services and manufacturing sectors to adapt and grow, and will seize opportunities to lead in new sectors, with high quality, well-paid jobs. It will shape the type of growth being pursued; the Government will also seek to support Net Zero, regional growth, and economic security and resilience.
These roles offer a unique opportunity to work with a wide range of teams within DBT and across Whitehall. This is also an excellent opportunity to develop and hone the skills required to progress further in the Civil Service.
Areas which successful candidates can expect to work on include:
- Coordinating insight and evidence and managing relationships with devolved governments, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland Offices and others.
- Contribute to ISU's engagement program by ensuring timely, well-planned engagements with thorough briefings that meet objectives.
- Create and maintain strong working relationships that coordinate work across ISU engagement team and DBT Comms and Marketing, Business Engagement Unit and cross-Whitehall departments ensuring cohesive communication plans and a coordinated engagement program.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders, identifying risks and opportunities while coordinating inputs from all relevant parties.
- Research, monitor, and update stakeholder mapping documents and engagement strategies to refine our approach.
- Support engagement and policy development to maximise growth in the 10-year Industrial Strategy.
- Draft briefings and advice for senior civil servants and ministers.
- Supporting engagement and policy development that ensures all four nations of the UK are represented in our sector and policy plans.
- Supporting the delivery of strategic engagement plans for the Industrial Strategy, including leading on meetings between senior industry representatives and ministers.
