Crynodeb
The IMD Department at Birmingham Childrens Hospital provides tertiary services for the diagnosis, treatment and management for patients with the entire range of Inherited Metabolic Disorders for the West Midlands (population approximately 5.2 million). The West Midlands is one of the largest regions in the United Kingdom and has a population with a higher incidence of IMD than most other regions. The service is commissioned as a specialist service by NHS England. The primary purpose of this post is to maintain and expand the existing service in Paediatric IMD at BCH by way of out-patient services, including the established outreach service to South Wales, in-patient liaison consultations (including the National Lysosomal Storage Disorders Service) in Birmingham Childrens Hospital and to help support the extensive departmental research programme. Special interests within the department at present include phenylketonuria, tyrosinaemia, lysosomal storage disorders, disorders of intermediary metabolism, liver-metabolic disease and the molecular genetics of complex metabolic disorders.
