SCOPE AND PURPOSE
The role is to serve as a mathematics tutor, providing maths tuition and supplementary curriculum sessions to small groups of
secondary students in school.
You will be responsible for an essential element of MEI’s Maths Progression Programme (MPP) Birmingham, delivering curriculum
support classes to 11–16 students from disadvantaged backgrounds in four schools in Birmingham throughout the academic year.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Liaising with MEI programme leads to plan curriculum support classes for small groups of students using MEI’s pre-designed
tasks and materials.
* Developing effective working relationships with the Maths Progression Lead (MPL) in each school to ensure the success of the
classes, coordinating on student attendance and progress in maths.
* Selecting activities from a suite of resources provided by MEI and evaluating their use in supporting the progress of higher
achieving students in maths.
* Delivering each class to a high quality on a weekly basis throughout the academic year to students from disadvantaged
backgrounds in four schools enrolled on the Birmingham MPP.
* Adapting session questions and responses to ensure high engagement and mathematical oracy by the students within the sessions.

* Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
* Experienced maths teacher with a minimum of two years’ classroom teaching experience working with students across Key Stage 3
and 4.
* Deep subject knowledge and understanding of problem solving in mathematics.
* Understanding of Key Stage 3 and 4 assessment and progress expectations.
* Excellent communication and presentation skills.
* Strong skills in teaching/tutoring, including high quality questioning.
* Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with colleagues.
* Approachability, compassion and ability to manage and motivate children.
* The ability to work in a way that promotes the safety and wellbeing of children and young people.
* A first degree in mathematics, or a strongly mathematics-based subject.
* Experience of mathematics enrichment or outreach work.
* Experience of working with and providing tuition/teaching to small groups of students.
* Experience of working with students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

This role will involve travelling to different schools across Birmingham. Having access to a car would be beneficial.
This role could be shared between two people – applications for job-share and expressions of interest in a 0.4 FTE role are
welcomed.
