About the role - Helping people feel heard, safe, and less alone
This job is all about being there for someone when they are having a really hard time, like when they feel very sad, scared, or even like they don’t want to be here anymore.
You don’t need to be a doctor or a therapist. Instead, you use your own life experience, maybe you’ve felt low yourself, had big worries, or lost someone, to understand what someone else might be going through.
Your job is to:
• Sit with people who are struggling
• Listen kindly and without judging
• Let them know they’re not alone
• Help them feel safer
• Support them to find more help if they want it
This is called peer support. It means “I’ve been there too, and I’ll walk with you through this.”
We’re looking for people who:
• Have their own experiences with mental health struggles, grief, or tough times
• Want to use those experiences to support others
• Can listen patiently and care without trying to fix everything
• Want to give hope to people who feel lost
You’ll be trained and supported, you won’t do this alone.
What You’ll Do in This Job
As a Mental Health Crisis Peer Supporter, you will:
• Sit with people 1:1 in a calm space called a Crisis Harbour
• Listen carefully and help them feel grounded and safe
• Use gentle ways to help people manage big feelings
• Work together to make a safety plan if someone feels at risk
• Share information about other services that might help
• Keep notes about your work and join in team chats and check-ins
• Work alongside other groups and services to give joined-up care
• Help make the Crisis Harbour feel welcoming, peaceful and kind for everyone
Who We’re Looking For
This job might be a great fit for you if:
• You have your own experience with mental health struggles, suicidal thoughts,
or losing someone to suicide
• You can support people without judging them
• You know how to look after your own wellbeing and ask for help if you need it
• You’re good at speaking kindly, listening well, and showing warmth
• You can set healthy boundaries in a caring and clear way
• You’re happy to work evenings and weekends
• You have a car and a full UK driving licence
It’s beneficial (but not essential) if you also have:
• Previous experience in mental health, peer support, or crisis services.
• NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 in Health & Social Care (or equivalent).
• Familiarity with local mental health services or support pathways.
About EPiC HOPE
EPiC HOPE is a compassionate, community-driven organisation dedicated to suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention in Wigan. Founded in response to Wigan and Leigh’s critical need for accessible suicide prevention support, we believe that no one should face mental health crisis, suicidal thoughts or bereavement alone.
