Educated to Engineering or City and Guilds level in a related subject, or be able to demonstrate equivalent organisational knowledge, you will also hold a Full Drivers Licence and HGV 2 licence as a minimum and hold a relevant plant and/or machinery operator licence, such as forklift truck/ride-on mower/tractor.
Working as a Skilled Technician, you will be expected to provide your own specialist hand and power tools and you will be an important part of the Fleet team. You will take a lead role in ensuring that our broad spectrum of mechanical equipment, including all vehicles and plant are well maintained, safe, reliable, and clean, to help SWISCo provide effective and efficient operational service to its customers.
To do this, you will need a wide knowledge and a technical understanding of the diverse range of fleet and mechanical equipment.
Not only will you carry out maintenance and repair tasks but you will also be an important link between our Team Managers and the operatives who operate our vehicles and plant.
In the event of an operational breakdown or failure, you will be responsible for attending the scene and managing this process to ensure vehicles return for maintenance or repairs whilst recognising the need for operational continuity. This will include supervising and guiding the driver and crews and deciding the best course of action to ensure that service is maintained in a safe and effective manner.
You will work with the Team Managers to plan schedules of work, including routine maintenance as well as service critical ad-hoc work, and input into this your local and professional knowledge.
The vehicles and plant you will be responsible for include but are not limited to:
• HGV Refuse collection and disposal vehicles
• HGV 1 Tractor and specialist trailer units
• HGV 2 rigid vehicles incl. specialist units such as gully suckers and road sweepers
• Electric vehicles
• Vans and trucks
• Ride on mowers
• Excavators
• Wheeled loaders
• Handheld electro-mechanical and petrol tools
You will be expected to attend breakdowns, accidents and equipment failures within Torbay and the surrounding areas to carry out remedial work to get the vehicle or plant operational or returned to the workshop. Deciding whatever task or operation is required to recover or repair the vehicle/equipment.
Due to the nature of the role, you may have to work outside in all weathers and will definitely be on your feet carrying and lifting.
Sites you work on could include busy roads or you may have to work on uneven ground which holds a number of hazards such as moving vehicles, drug paraphernalia, dogs and insects.
As well as driving vans, 7.5-ton lorries, tractors and small plant safely, you will also be driving HGV vehicles, so an HGV license is essential. It is important that you do so in line with the company O Licence, have up to date CPC and are aware of the need to report and repair faults and defects and carry out vehicle checks.
All our vehicles must be kept clean and tidy as they represent SWISCo and you must operate them in a safe and legal way.
Personal Protective Clothing will be provided and it is mandatory that this is worn at all times and you must be willing to undertake a range of training in methods of safe work to which you must adhere.
It is important that as an employee of SWISCo, you are friendly and helpful to the people you meet who are generally polite and will be appreciative of the work you are doing.
Importantly, you should be proud of the work you do in this role as it will help make Torbay a great place to live and work in.
We are a HM forces friendly employer as recognised by our bronze armed forces covenant award and as such any veteran who meets the essential criteria will be offered an interview.
