The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and works on behalf of the Scottish Government and Welsh Government. The aim of this role is to manage a core APHA production facility supplying mammalian and avian cell cultures, monoclonal antibodies and their related products, to APHA and commercial customers.

Management

  • Responsible for ensuring the provision of avian and mammalian primary cultures to APHA and commercial customers.
  • Responsible for the production and quality control of antibody products for commercial sale.
  • Be proactive in liaising and collaborating with key stakeholders, including Defra policy, APHA regulatory authorities, Manufacturers, suppliers, senior management, APHA contracts, APHA Safety, Health, and Wellbeing Dept. (SHaW), Facilities Management, and external contractors.
  • To manage production of reagents using Integra stock management system.
  • Liaise closely with staff in Finance, PSUR and Sales desk to ensure any queries or problems are dealt with effectively.
  • Cultivate and maintain expert network in the cell culture area – APHA Virology and Pirbright Institute.
  • Investigate new technologies to reduce use of animals in the preparation of primary cells.
  • Ensure accreditation and compliance to ISO 9001 and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
  • Provide professional advice to APHA commercial and external customers.
  • Maintain the main APHA reference storage facility for cell lines and hybridomas and their back-up at The European Collection of Authenticated Cell Cultures (ECACC).
  • Production of new hybridomas and monoclonal antibodies for research groups at APHA.
  • To ensure animal work complies with Home Office regulations.
  • Provide antibody purification and labelling service to APHA/commercial customers.
  • Provide expert advice to APHA colleagues onFast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC).
  • Management of EO involved in production.
  • Planning and organising new work and strategic development of CTC – such as producing proteins by genetic manipulation and, grey squirrel contraceptive vaccine for Natural England.
  • Line management responsibilities for EO working in cell preparation.
  • Develop annual training plan for staff to maintain staff competence. Ensure ad hoc monitoring of individuals working in the facility is carried out and recorded.

Safety

  • To manage facilities ensuring they are functional and compliant with APHA Safety Policies, Standards and Guidance to permit safe and effective delivery of work.
  • To instil the highest standards of safety within the laboratory ensuring that staff are fully aware of their responsibility to colleagues and themselves.
  • Organise contingency and fire drills.
  • Ensure risk assessments are in place and reviewed yearly.
  • Ensure all work carried out within team complies with appropriate legislation e.g. Animal Scientific Procedures Act (Home Office).
  • Present a minimum of one toolbox talk each year.

Quality

  • To ensure all work complies to ISO 9000 and GMP standards.
  • The post holder will assist with audits, investigate none conforming work and prepare trouble shooting investigations.
  • Writing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).
