We are consistently one of the top trusts regionally for performance against the 4-hour standard, delivered by focusing on high quality patient care throughout the organization. In 2019, we won the inaugural Newcastle Hospitals Clinical Team of the Year Award. This combination of high performance, varied case mix and close team working create a unique environment to support your professional development and enjoyment of your job. We have an excellent track record of helping our teaching fellows build portfolios which rank very highly in national recruitment and have experience of progressing senior doctors through the CESR route to Consultant level.
The Teaching Fellow posts span a variety of clinical areas and research domains within Newcastle-upon-Tyne Hospitals, with varied time allocated for clinical and teaching-based work within different posts (posts range from between 30% and 50% allocated teaching time). Theclinicalopportunities are dependent on the department and equivalent grade of the teaching fellow, however many posts offer ward-based experience, time to attend clinics and theatre lists, as well as the chance to be involved in or lead departmental teaching, audits and quality improvement projects.
Our staff oversee over 6,500 patient contacts every day, delivering high standards of healthcare from the following sites:
• Freeman Hospital
• Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI)
• Health Innovation Neighbourhood (on the former Newcastle General Hospital and Centre for Ageing and Vitality site)
• Newcastle Dental Hospital
• Newcastle Fertility Centre
• Northern Centre for Cancer Care, North Cumbria
• Northern Genetics Service
• Cramlington Manor Walks
These include a range of flagship services which deliver cutting-edge care (supported by state-of-the-art diagnostic services in both radiology and pathology) and are a catalyst for innovation to support pioneering clinical practice in the NHS.
We also have offices at Regent Point in Gosforth and community sites.

The successful applicant will be responsible for delivering clinical teaching sessions to Newcastle University medical students attached to Newcastle Hospitals. The Trust has a role in the delivery of teaching to all 5 years of the undergraduate MBBS programme but most of the teaching will be delivered to students in years 3, 4 and 5. As well as delivering fixed commitments within the programme it is hoped Teaching Fellows will develop their own innovative ideas for clinical teaching during their time with us.
The Trust Undergraduate Team consists of a group of enthusiastic Clinicians under the leadership of Assistant Director of Medical Education, Dr Ian Baxter, supported by Teaching Fellow Lead, Dr Andrew Stanton and an invaluable team of administrative staff. We will offer support and supervision over the year as well as training and mentorship so that you develop your own teaching skills and understanding of wider issues in medical education. As well as being offered in-house induction and training, the post holder will also be supported to undertake a Certificate of Clinical Education as part of this post.
