About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced individual to join the Sport Department at Buxton and Leek College as a Sports Lecturer and Course Leader. The primary purpose of the role is to deliver high-quality teaching, learning, and assessment across a range of sports-related courses, ensuring that students are engaged, supported, and equipped with the skills needed for success in the industry. You will also take on Course Leader responsibilities, overseeing the tracking and monitoring of specific programmes including attendance, liaising with parents/guardians/carers, maintaining electronic records, progress towards achievement, utilising strategies to improve performance, and supporting the work experience team. This ensures a positive learning experience for all students.
Key duties include designing and delivering engaging lessons, assessing student progress, and providing constructive feedback to promote academic achievement. The role also involves curriculum development, employer engagement, and supporting students with employability skills, work placements, and progression opportunities. Beyond the classroom, you will contribute to wider departmental activities, including attending parents’ evenings, interviewing prospective students, and supporting Saturday open days and other recruitment events. Additionally, you will be required to collaborate with colleagues on quality assurance processes and continuous improvement initiatives.
This role is anticipated to be an even split between our Campus at Kedleston Road in Derby; and our Campus in Buxton; however this may change dependant on the needs of the business.
This is a rewarding role for someone who is committed to student success, proactive in their approach, and eager to make a meaningful impact in sports education.
The anticipated interview date is Wednesday 30th July 2025.
About You
The ideal candidate for this role will be a professional with a strong background in sport, sports science, physical education, or a related field. You will have experience in teaching or delivering training within a sports education setting and a solid understanding of current trends in sport, fitness, and coaching. You will also take on Course Leader responsibilities, overseeing the planning, coordination, and quality assurance of specific sports programmes while supporting student success.
We are looking for someone with honesty and integrity, acting as a positive role model for students and maintaining professional and ethical standards at all times. The ability to work proactively and independently is key, as the role requires strong organisational skills and the initiative to drive continuous improvement within the curriculum. A solution-focused mindset is essential, enabling the candidate to identify challenges and implement effective strategies to enhance student outcomes. Additionally, excellent communication skills are required to engage and inspire learners, while also collaborating effectively with colleagues to contribute to the department’s ongoing success.
While not essential, industry experience in sport, coaching, or fitness would be highly advantageous, as would experience in delivering practical sports sessions. Knowledge of safeguarding practices and student wellbeing, along with familiarity with digital teaching methods and online learning platforms, would further strengthen a candidate’s application. In return, you will have the opportunity to develop professionally, take on leadership responsibilities, and make a meaningful impact on the future of sports education at Buxton and Leek College.
