The Hospital Medical Director (HMD) will be a key member of the senior management team within the Hospital, as part of the leadership triumvirate. The HMD will be accountable for the delivery of safe, high quality patient care. The HMD will be responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, equitable, patient-centred care that is efficiently delivered by the Hospital and the Group. They will work in unison with other Hospital Medical Directors within the Group and have a professional reporting responsibility into the Group Chief Medical Officer. Working with the Hospital site and across the Group, the HMD will be responsible for professional medical management and development across the Hospital. The HMD will support the Hospital Executive Director to lead the development of the hospital's clinical strategy, setting standards and supporting continuous improvement and the integration of clinical service collaboration across primary, community and hospital care. The role is available with six medical and six management PA's. KEY SKILLS *Decisive leader, capable and committed to translating policy and analysis into practical actions. *Significant organisational change experience / managing difficult and complex change *Demonstrate leadership and ambassadorial skills with an ability to demonstrate a flexible leadership style. *Experience of service innovation, and development. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Corporate *Lead the translation of University Hospitals Birmingham's vision alongside fellow Hospital Directors, and the Group Leadership, to deliver and improve high quality clinical care, and continuous development of our staff across all groups. *Contribute to the corporate management of the Group with specific responsibility for medical advice regarding operation of the Hospital within the Group. *Provide expert medical advice on any relevant initiatives for example implementation of recommendations from NICE, National Inquiries, External Investigations etc. *To act as an ambassador for the Group, and Hospital, and contribute to the wider health and Group agenda in the region and nationally as appropriate. *Share corporate responsibility to promote the Group, and Hospital, within the wider community, developing sustainable partnerships within the multi-agency health and social care community. Leadership *To be a member of the Hospital site senior leadership team to deliver the safe and efficient functioning of the Hospital and its accompanying clinical strategy. *To represent medical leadership at the hospital site, in particular supporting cross-CDG leadership. *To be the 'on site' and 'day to day' medical lead for the respective Hospital site *To lead clinical delivery as part of the site triumvirate by reporting to the Board and the sub-committees as required *To provide high level and visionary leadership to the Hospital's Medical workforce and all senior clinical leaders *Be responsible for medical workforce development, contribution to service excellence and efficiency, good patient experience and professionalism. *Providing senior clinical leadership with respect to quality and its governance and improvement throughout the hospital site. *Promoting significant and sustained improvements in the quality of clinical services provided by the Trust and the way all staff groups are trained and developed. *Act as a specialist advisor to all staff and related agencies, specifically relating to Medical staff *Support and promote an organisational culture committed to learning from complaints, incidents, audit, research and development. *Promote an organisational culture that facilitates team-work in the design, management and delivery of clinical services, ensuring medical staff are both cognisant of and active in ensuring holistic models of care. *To deputise when required for the Hospital Chief Executive Strategic Development *To support the development of the vision and strategy for the Hospital and lead the development of the Hospital's clinical strategy in line with the Trust's corporate strategy. *Develop the strategic management capability of the Hospital's clinical leaders, and ensure that clinical leaders and their teams are fully supported, involved in and engaged in the strategic planning and management of the Hospital *To contribute to the Hospital's strategic vision and develop relationships with key external partners and stakeholders. Operational *To play a supportive role in the development of partnership working across patient pathways with other NHS organisations and partners. *To represent the Hospital externally and to work where appropriate with stakeholders to establish good working relationships with colleagues across the ICS *Work closely with the senior leadership teams to ensure delivery of high quality, safe and responsive care across all services and sites. For example, assessing and reviewing the medical workforce needs across the hospital against the operational and strategic demands. *Support the Hospital Director On-call rota, supporting the out of hours delivery of services and operational management of the hospital. *Contribute to the delivery of the Hospital, and Groups, Quality and Cost Improvement Programme(s) Clinical *To establish a robust system for evaluating the quality and effectiveness of our services in the Hospital *To support Clinical Transformation ensuring the Hospital maximises the opportunities to become a leading edge clinically led organisation *To promote the provision of care based upon the best evidence, and which produces the best outcomes for patients by embedding the Hospital's quality strategy. *To support the Hospital Executive Director in the redesign of clinical services to meet the Trust's strategic direction. *To oversee and support the relevant clinical policy frameworks, systems and processes. *Support the work of the Clinical Advisory Groups Governance *To develop assurance, risk and reporting systems to provide the necessary assurance to the Hospital Management Board and its Committees *Working in partnership with the Hospital Nursing Director to support a robust and clearly understood approach to patient and healthcare governance, including clinical risk *To work with the Hospital Executive Director to ensure the outcome and implications of inspections conducted by external bodies (for example, CQC, NHSI and NHS England) are reported to relevant Hospital groups and ensure that recommended actions are fully implemented and appropriately reviewed to ensure compliance. *Work closely with other fellow Trust Hospital Medical Directors and Hospital Nursing Director to develop and communicate the Hospital vision for clinical governance and galvanise and support staff in promoting commitment to governance and risk
