The candiate must be flexible and work across 3 sites: University Hospital of North Durham, Sunderland Royal Hospital and Shotleybridge Hospital. To treat patients according to their individual needs and prescription, acting as their advocate as required. Supervise the nursing team on a day-to-day basis, referring to the departmental manager when necessary. Take charge of the department in the absence of a senior member of staff. To provide nursing assistance and technical support within clinics. To provide advice to patients within the department enabling optimum treatment, via telephone enquiries and through health promotion information and/or information leaflets. Teaching new skills to patients to manage self-care. Dependant on previous experience, act as a mentor to students Supervision and training of unqualified and newly appointed staff. Ability to respond appropriately, giving support to distressed patients, relatives and carers during and following consultation. Supervision of the nursing team, referring to the departmental manager where appropriate Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Trust Personnel and Health and Safety policies. The post requires first level registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Effective communication skills with adults and children. Ability to organize and undertake their own work and supervise that of unqualified staff. Ability to function within the multi-skilled environment of outpatients across a variety of specialities and practices. Ability to access and navigate the Trust clinical IT programmes. Ability to deliver training to other members of staff and patients. Ability to perform phlebotomy. To carry out and supervise prescribed treatments having evidence based knowledge, and ensuring patient informed consent, to gain optimum recovery / patient compliance. Manage distressed, abusive and /or complaining patients, relatives or carers, referring to a senior member of staff or security officer where necessary. To monitor clinic appointment times and report regular deviations from the rules, to support 30 minute wait targets.. To liaise with supporting services to ensure complete investigation and/or treatment for the patient e.g. District nurses, Macmillan services, social services, wards, and professions allied to medicine. To monitor stock supplies and alert budget holder to any shortages or equipment needs. To act as a link nurse between the outpatients and other hospital departments in support of the clinical governance strategy and cascade training as required. To support a safe environment for visitors and staff in accordance with Trust Health and Safety policy, reporting contemporaneously any untoward incidents. To participate in the development of research based practice and multidisciplinary audit of practice, to maintain and raise standard of care provision. To maintain competence of practice in accordance with the responsibilities of registration to practice with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and to minimize risk to patients. The post holder is required to promote the Trusts core values of care, quality, respect, leadership and achievement by adherence to the behavioural competencies as detailed on the Trusts website/intranet site. To communicate with other professionals to expedite investigation, treatment, admission and support care. To communicate effectively with patients and / or their carers to ensure informed consent to treatment, promote their recovery and reduce complications of their condition. To communicate with Consultants and their secretaries to ensure seamless provision of services. To communicate with support services e.g. health records staff, supplies department, to ensure seamless consultation, treatment and follow-up of the patients. To develop strong working relationships and communication with colleagues within the department, in order that relevant information is shared in a timely fashion, with due regard to confidentiality. To provide supervision, leadership and advice to junior staff. It is a standard element of the role and responsibility of all staff of the Trust that they fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. Members of staff are responsible for adherence to all Trust policies for the safety of staff and patients at work. You will be expected to complete PDP and revaildation.
