We're looking for a calm, caring, and reliable Night Time Care Officer to join a secondary specialist provision in the Chelmsford area. This is a permanent, full-time position with working hours from 8:00pm to 7:30am, providing consistent, overnight support to vulnerable students with complex SEMH and additional needs.
This role suits someone with a nurturing approach and strong professional boundaries. You'll be overseeing a small group of young people in residential care, ensuring they feel safe, supported, and emotionally settled overnight. Whether offering a listening ear, responding to safeguarding concerns, or supporting night-time routines, your presence will be central to their well-being.
The team you'll join is experienced and tight-knit, and the setting is purpose-built for young people who thrive in structure, routine, and therapeutic care. This is not just supervision - it's meaningful, human connection that helps young people build stability.
You will be well-compensated under the NJC Grade 5 (Fringe) pay scale, with excellent benefits and the satisfaction of making a direct impact every shift.
Professional development is supported at every stage - this is a fantastic stepping stone for those looking to grow into care leadership, safeguarding, or mental health-focused education roles.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide consistent overnight support and supervision to young people
• Ensure the safety, comfort, and emotional wellbeing of students
• Respond to incidents, concerns, or alerts in line with safeguarding protocols
• Support students with bedtime and morning routines as required
• Complete logs and reporting accurately and promptly
• Work collaboratively with care and education teams
• Help create a calm, secure overnight environment
• Experience in a care, education, or youth support setting
• Understanding of safeguarding and emotional regulation needs
• Ability to remain calm and attentive during night shifts
• Compassionate and consistent with clear communication skills
• NVQ Level 2/3 in Health & Social Care (or similar) preferred
• Experience with SEMH, Autism, or looked-after children is a bonus
• Able to commit to full-time, overnight working hours
SENDirect is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
All applicants must have the right to work in the UK and will be subject to enhanced DBS and reference checks in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education. Sponsorship is not available.
