Research Associate
Cardiff University School of Computer Science & Informatics
Applications are invited for a Research Associate post in the Cardiff University School of Computer Science & Informatics, to work on the EPSRC Open Fellowship project ReStoRe (Reasoning about Structured Story Representations), which is focused on story-level language understanding. The overall aim of this project is to develop methods for inferring graph-structured representations of stories. For this post, the specific focus will be on developing commonsense reasoning strategies to fill the gap between what is explicitly stated in a story and what a human reader would infer by “reading between the lines”.
You will work closely with Steven Schockaert. You will possess or be near the completion of a PhD in Computer Science or a related area or have relevant industrial experience.
The position is full-time (35 hours per week), available immediately until 30 April 2027.
The appointment will be made, dependent on relevant qualifications and experience, within the Grade 6 scale, currently £40,497 - £45,413 per annum (Grade 6).
For an informal discussion of the post please contact Steven Schockaert by email at schockaerts1@cardiff.ac.uk.
For an informal chat about the School of Computer Science & Informatics, please contact the Deputy School Manager, Charlie Balcombe (balcombec@cardiff.ac.uk)
Date advert posted: Monday, 30 June 2025
Closing date: Monday, 21 July 2025
This post has previously been advertised to employees of Cardiff University only. We now invite external applications.
Cardiff University is committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity and to creating an inclusive working environment. We believe this can be achieved through attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse range of staff from many different backgrounds. We therefore welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of sex, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, trans identity, relationship status, religion or belief, caring responsibilities, or age. In supporting our employees to achieve a balance between their work and their personal lives, we will also consider proposals for flexible working or job share arrangements.
Applications may be submitted in Welsh, and an application submitted in Welsh will not be treated less favourably than an application submitted in English.
Cardiff University is a signatory to the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), which means that in hiring and promotion decisions we will evaluate applicants on the quality of their research, not publication metrics or the identity of the journal in which the research is published.
