Job Purpose:

To prepare and cook nutritious, well-balanced meals for elderly residents in accordance with their dietary requirements, preferences, and health needs, ensuring a high standard of food hygiene and kitchen safety.

Key Responsibilities: Prepare and cook daily meals including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks in line with the home’s menu plan and individual care plans. Cater for a variety of dietary needs including diabetic, low-salt, soft/puréed, vegetarian, and allergen-free meals.

Ensure high standards of hygiene, cleanliness, and food safety at all times in accordance with Food Hygiene Regulations and CQC standards. Maintain accurate records including temperature checks, cleaning schedules, and stock rotation. Order, receive, and store food deliveries safely and efficiently. Consult with care staff to ensure residents’ dietary preferences and cultural needs are respected. Minimise food waste and operate within the allocated kitchen budget. Create a warm, welcoming mealtime atmosphere and engage positively with residents when appropriate.

Requirements: Essential: Proven experience in a similar cooking role, preferably in a care or healthcare setting. Knowledge of food hygiene regulations and allergen awareness. Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate (minimum). Ability to work independently and manage kitchen operations. Good communication and teamwork skills. Compassionate, respectful attitude towards elderly individuals. Desirable: Level 3 Food Hygiene Certificate. NVQ in Catering or equivalent. Experience working with vulnerable adults or in a regulated environment (e.g., CQC, Ofsted). Knowledge of texture-modified diets and nutritional needs for older people.
