We’re looking for a Retail Team Member to welcome visitors to the National Trust shop and plant centre at Fountains Abbey, answer their questions and help them make the most of their day.

Salary: £12.25

Contract/duration: Fixed term until 31st December 2025

Hours: This role is an hourly paid, fixed term role. Wherever possible we aim to offer a consistent working pattern, but we’re looking for flexibility as it may be necessary for us to alter this pattern from time to time to suit the needs of the business. We’d give you as much notice of this as possible.

Zero hours contract so hours/days may vary. Typical shifts start at 10am and finish at 5:45pm, 5:15pm or 4:45pm depending on the time of year. Shorter shifts (3-5 hours) may be worked, this can be discussed at interview. Weekend and bank holiday work required. One evening shift in October.

Interview date: Friday 18th July

What it's like to work here
Fountains Abbey shop is an important part of the overall visitor experience, you’ll develop your knowledge of the site and retail at the National Trust. The shop is a busy and varied environment stocking a range of products across multiple departments, including plants and outdoor garden stock. You’ll join a team of hard-working, outgoing, and friendly staff and volunteers. This role reports to the Retail Manager.

What you'll be doing
As a member of the retail team, you’ll be offering visitors help and advice with their shopping. You’ll have high standards of presentation in the shop and plant centre while providing excellent service to all customers. You’ll also be able to talk to them about how everything they buy helps to fund the work of the National Trust. Other duties include receiving and unpacking deliveries, creating and maintaining displays and keeping the shop floor and our storage facilities clean, tidy and organised. This is an active role which involves working both inside the shop and outside in our plant centre and courtyards.

Whilst this role will support the whole retail operation, there will be a focus on the outdoor areas, looking after our plants and garden stock such as pots, mirrors and stakes. This includes watering, deadheading and monitoring plant health.
