Role Overview
The External Affairs Adviser will report directly to Strategic Engagement Manager. In this role, you will be responsible for:
Key Responsibilities:
- Support MaPS’ engagement with government as an arm’s-length body, helping to maintain strong relationships with ministers, officials and wider Whitehall stakeholders.
- Contribute to the delivery of our parliamentary strategy, ensuring activity aligns with MaPS’ statutory remit and corporate objectives.
- Provide input on positioning and messaging, and advise on government-facing campaigns and stakeholder engagement.
- Monitor developments across Parliament and government to identify emerging risks and opportunities, and shape our response accordingly.
- Coordinate executive-level external engagement by providing briefings and speeches for senior colleagues and attending necessary meetings.
- Maintain stakeholder maps and databases and coordinate the effective delivery of our engagement plans.
- Serve as a single point of contact for responding to external queries from Westminster, including parliamentary correspondence, casework and enquiries.
- Collaborate with various teams (policy, corporate strategy, press, customer communications, insight and evaluation) to support the delivery of engaging, multi-stakeholder campaigns.
You will need to demonstrate the following skills and experience.
To excel in this role, you will need to demonstrate:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in developing compelling content for various stakeholder audiences.
- Proven experience in stakeholder engagement, including working with subject matter experts and distilling complex information into concise content.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with both external and internal stakeholders.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with other teams and disciplines within and outside the organisation in fast-paced environments.
- Experience in organising events.
- Commitment to inclusive and collaborative working practices, communications, and engagement.

Flexible Working
At MaPS, we take pride in our flexible approach to work. As standard, we work on a hybrid basis with a minimum of 2 days in the office per week. Hybrid working is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and our headquarters in Bedford will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business needs, but personal and other relevant circumstances will also be considered. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.
