Summary

In this role, you will join a high-performing team delivering cutting-edge mechanical engineering solutions to support a specialist UK military user community. You will be embedded within a unique military organisation, within the Mechatronics department and reporting to the Head of Mechatronics. Your work will focus on solving complex tactical and operational challenges through the delivery of novel, deployable technologies that provide real-world impact.

The role demands critical thinking, creativity, and technical excellence. You will be expected to accurately capture requirements - considering and understanding the user’s needs, design, develop, test and deliver practical engineering systems—often under pressure, with limited information, and always in direct support of those operating at the front line. You should have experience of using the latest CAD software packages and be able to design for additive manufacturing as well as ‘core/classic’ engineering machinery. You will need to produce technical and operational reports and design documentation and drawings, describing project work undertaken including safety considerations and any requirements for operation and maintenance in-line with ISO 9001 standards. You are to maintain up to date knowledge of emerging technology in your discipline through continued professional development.

Your responsibilities will include handling sensitive and classified information with discretion, contributing technical insight to mission planning and analysis, and ensuring that every solution developed is informed by real operational context. You’ll be a technical leader and a trusted adviser, expected to manage project direction while remaining personally involved in engineering delivery.

To be successful, you’ll hold an OfQual. Level 6 qualification (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, or a related field. You will bring substantial experience across a range of technical domains, including CAD, material science and finite element analysis. Above all, you must be comfortable working in a hands-on role—this is an on-site, hands-on role which will require designing, production, assembly and testing, all while effectively communicating with the end-user.
