Job Title: Benefit Assessment Officer
Department: Housing, Benefits & Planning
Location: One Angel Square, Northampton
Hours: 37 hours per week (Monday–Friday, shifts between 9am–7pm)
Pay: £17 per hour
Job Summary:
West Northamptonshire Council is seeking a detail-oriented and customer-focused Benefit Assessment Officer to join the Housing, Benefits & Planning team. You will be responsible for assessing and processing claims for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction in accordance with legislation, policy, and service standards.
Key Responsibilities:
• Accurately assess new and existing benefit claims, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and policies.
• Communicate effectively with claimants, landlords, and stakeholders.
• Identify discrepancies or potential fraud and escalate appropriately.
• Update systems and maintain accurate records of all decisions.
• Provide excellent customer service in person, by phone, and digitally.
Requirements:
• Experience in benefit assessment or a similar local authority role preferred.
• Strong knowledge of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction regulations.
• Good IT and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage workloads efficiently.
