About Us
The Highway Structures Team is small team of professionals that operates within Highways & Transportation and manages the entire bridge stock and highway related structures within the road network of Stockport.
The Council as the Highway Authority has a duty under the Highways Act, 1980 to maintain the Council’s highway structures. The Highway Structures Team has the responsibility for fulfilling part of the statutory obligations. Inspecting, assessing and maintaining the bridge stock and related structures are our key priorities, along with ensuring public safety at all times.
The Highway Structures team undertakes these responsibilities for a bridge stock that varies from major, multi-span bridges to simple footpath crossings using a wide variety of construction techniques and materials. All the bridge stock has an impact on the adopted highway and any works must take into consideration impact with all road users and pedestrians. Many of the structures are listed, historic or lie within Conservation areas, and consequently require detailed input. Others span or support important infrastructure such as major roads, railways, rivers and canals.
We also provide a consultancy role to other departments within the authority who may require specialist structure advice.
