Do you have an interest in Geriatric Medicine?

We are currently expanding our team, which you could be part of!

We are excited to be advertising Permanent Clinical Fellow posts based in our Geriatrics Clinical Groupat Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals. Our Clinical Group has a strong track record in colleague training and development in addition to patient care. We are a supportive and active division with ongoing developments and initiatives across the clinical and educational spectrum.

These roles are based within the Acute Hospitals in the Geriatrics wards with full participation in the acute medicine on-call rota and opportunities to work in outpatient community settings in the Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch.

These posts are suited to doctors wishing to develop their skills in Geriatrics and Internal medicine, and are looking to gain further experience at SHO level before their next training post. The successful applicant will begin work at a level commensurate with previous experience.

Colleagues in our division attend weekly Geriatrics teaching as well as presenting in fortnightly Journal Club and M&M meetings. There are also opportunities to participate in or lead audits and QIP, as well as teaching medical students.

The post holder will drive forward developments, improving the quality of care delivered to patients with a focus on maximising peoples’ independence and supporting their return to their usual place of residence wherever possible. You will receive peer support from staff working across the Geriatrics Clinical Group at BHRUT and be fully supported by an integrated management team helping you to drive forward change.

The successful post-holder would support the Multidisciplinary care of our patients through the extremely busy frailty pathway. We have opportunities for individuals who are looking to develop their skills at a higher level relating to the complex range of cases seen through a large number of acutely unwell elderly patients.

All staff will have a mentor/supervisor for help and guidance. This post would provide a good platform for candidates wishing to seek approved training rotations, particularly in Geriatrics, Specialist Medicine, Emergency Medicine and GP.

Geriatrics ward duties:

- Consultant and SpR ward rounds

- SHO ward rounds: assessing patients, progressing plans and continuity of care under supervision

- Assessing unwell patients and initiating treatment

- Liaising with specialty teams and making referrals

- Organising and reviewing test results

- Ward procedures

- MDT working and board rounds

- Discharge planning

- Provision of medical reports/referrals and discharge summaries

- Accurate and effective handovers/transfers of care verbally and electronically

- Safe and appropriate application ethical and legal considerations including DOLS, safeguarding, mental capacity assessments

- Updating families and explaining tests to families and patients

Acute medicine on call duties:

- Assessing and diagnosing new patients on medical take

- Initiating treatment and arranging tests

- Post take ward rounds, enacting and completing plans

- Medical ward cover

- Cardiac arrest team

- Accurate and effective handovers/transfers of care verbally and electronically

General duties

- Responsibility to work as a team to provide the best care to our patients.

- Perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation where practicable with their colleagues both senior and junior.

- Actively participate in performance appraisal as per Trust guidelines.

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better. We were the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance in 2023/24; we’re no longer in special measures; and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and that our patients are happy with.

Many of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. More than 400 of them are on apprenticeship programmes and we’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We operate from two main sites - King George Hospital (KGH) in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023.

Patients across northeast London are benefitting from two new state of the art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub will significantly increase the number of scans that can be carried out.

We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record next year. This will mean the records of any patient visiting one of the seven hospitals run by BHRUT and BARTS Health will be accessible to the clinical teams. It’ll make things easier for staff and will be better for patients.
