Summary
As a Generalist Adviser you will support people in Plymouth with a wide range of issues. At Citizens Advice Plymouth we support everyone to find a solution to the problems they’re facing, no matter who they are. The service provides advice face-to-face in our office, through outreach work at different locations across Plymouth, on the phone and digitally.
You’ll conduct telephone, webchat, and face-to-face appointments using sensitive listening and questioning skills to allow the clients to explain their problem. You will ensure all relevant information is collected efficiently and accurately on our recording systems and give clients high quality advice which could be on a range of issues, including employment, budgeting, grants, and income maximisation, debt, consumer, family, housing, and immigration.
You will be expected to complete 9 appointments a week, either face-to-face or over the phone. There is no average appointment – advice is tailored to each client.
This is a busy role where no two days are the same. While it can be challenging, this role offers the chance to help people with their problems and develop valuable advice skills, as well as knowledge on benefits, employment, housing, immigration, consumer issues and family and relationship issues.
The role is primarily office-based work with some outreach work completed at locations in the Plymouth area. This is not a hybrid working role.
The role is 37 hours a week (9-5 Monday-Thursday and 9-4:30 on Fridays) on a permanent basis. We are happy to discuss part-time and flexible working arrangements with prospective applicants.
This role will start on: Tuesday 16th September 2025.
Training: Full training will be provided at our city centre office in Cobourg House, Mayflower Street. This is a 7-week period from 16th September 2025, and you must be available full-time for the full 7-week training period - no annual leave will be approved for these weeks. We are not able to accommodate part-time training.
What we’re looking for
You will thrive on working with a diverse range of people and be open-minded, approachable and non-judgmental. You will take an empathetic and compassionate approach to clients to find solutions to the problems they are facing. You will have good critical thinking skills, with the ability to identify and unpick issues.
Advisers need to be resilient and able to manage face-to-face appointments and phone conversations well, including where clients are upset or suicidal. Good communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential, as is the ability to effectively communicate with our clients with a non-judgmental approach.
You’ll be able to write up case notes accurately and efficiently using a range of Office 365 programs and keep databases up to date accurately.
You will have good prioritisation and time management skills to be able to work efficiently as part of a team to reach as many clients as possible as quickly as possible.
The ideal candidate will have some advice knowledge, and some knowledge of the current benefits system, but this is not essential as full training will be provided.
Closing date Monday 21st July 2025 at 9am
