What's involved with this role:

JOB TITLE: Principal Planning Officer
REF: Rugby RQ1548447
Pay rate: £21.98 per hour PAYE
Working Arrangement: Hybrid working 2 days a week in office
A full UK driving licence with access to own transport for business use

The role:

On behalf of a local council, we are seeking a Principal Planning Officer for approximately 3 months.

In this role, you will work on complex and high-profile major planning applications, ensuring development aligns with local and national planning policies, while delivering sustainable and high-quality outcomes.

You will also be managing a small team of Planning Officers, supporting their development and performance to meet strategic priorities.

Initially 3 months with extension for the right candidate.

Rate maybe flexible for the right candidate. Please provide your salary expectations with your CV.

Key Responsibilities may include:

Manage and determine complex and significant major planning applications, including pre-application discussions and negotiations.
Present cases clearly and confidently at Planning Committee meetings, and attend site visits and appeals as required.
Provide expert planning advice to councillors, developers, stakeholders, and the public.
Line manage a small team, providing leadership, mentoring, and professional support to ensure timely and high-quality decision-making.
Work collaboratively with internal departments and external bodies to deliver positive planning outcomes.



What the client is looking for:

Degree in Town Planning or related discipline and eligibility for RTPI membership
Significant experience dealing with major and complex planning applications
Strong report writing, negotiation, and presentation skills
Experience of presenting at Planning Committees and dealing with public inquiries
Experience managing or mentoring staff
