In this pivotal role, you will be accountable for the overall leadership, performance, and strategic direction of the laboratory, ensuring seamless coordination across all operational, technical, and commercial functions.

Main Responsibilities:

- Accountable for the P&L of the laboratory businesses of DETS South and successfully delivering the Operational Plan.
- Ensure that Health and Safety procedures are adhered to and the wider Normec Group policies and practices are followed.
- Overall accountability for the day-to-day operations of DETS South laboratory.
- Direct and manage all reportees and their teams to ensure that they are appropriately motivated and trained and carry out their responsibilities to the required standards.
- Support the Sales Director in achieving strong growth and drive sales initiatives to expand DETS South.
- Plan, develop, organise, implement, direct and evaluate the Company’s operations and performance.
- Oversee laboratory performance and productivity to maintain and improve operational efficiencies. For example to implement new LEAN initiatives.
- Provide all necessary technical advice and direction to enable the company to achieve its strategic objectives.
- Oversee the development and implementation of all necessary quality control procedures to ensure that output meets required standards and that plant and machinery is effectively maintained.
- Keep all products and processes under review and introduce new technology as directed, and ensure continuous improvement takes place.
- Raise the potential of new products and processes beneficial for ourselves or our customers
- Develop and control budgets and carry out all necessary financial analysis to ensure that costs are controlled and service is maintained to the required standards within the DETS South laboratory.
- Maintain a work environment that encourages employee development and communication.
- Develop and maintain systems that ensure the technical competency of personnel within the business unit.
- Support quality teams to improve the service provided by the laboratory. Develop corrective action plans to address identified deficiencies
- Direct the implementation and management of changes to the business and ensure they are met.
- Oversee the implementation, development, review and update of standard operating procedures.
- Negotiate the purchase of materials and equipment by the company ensuring that these meet specifications and can be delivered at the correct time at the most favourable prices.

Experience required:

- At least 5 years of business management experience, ideally gained in the environmental sectors;
- Demonstrable experience working in a fast paced production led environment operating to tight deadlines ideally gained operating in the testing, inspection or certification (TIC) sector;
- Proven track record of business improvement including top and bottom line P&L gains;
- A knowledge and understanding of maintaining operations to ISO standards such as 17025, 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001
- Proven financial management competency.
- Experience in commercial management of a business, including customer support and management.
- Experience managing multiple staff and projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with the implementation of LEAN and associated practices
An understanding or knowledge of chemistry in the environmental sector combined with laboratory experience, would be ideal.
