The Department for Transport (DfT) is a high-profile department at the heart of government. We plan and invest to make journeys better.

The DfT Content Design and Publications Team is part of the User Centred Design Branch. The team creates and manages all aspects of the department’s content on GOV.UK and provides content design input into the department's other digital content and services. We ensure that digital content is accessible and that it meets the needs of both users and the department.

Department for Transport Central - Department for Transport Careers

We are looking for a full-time Senior Content Designer. You will be responsible for the production of high-quality, usable and accessible content, including all aspects of drafting, publishing, maintaining, testing and improving the department’s digital services and GOV.UK content.

You will be a skilled writer and editor with excellent attention to detail. You will also know how to write simply and clearly, with the user in mind. You will have the confidence to champion user needs and high-quality content within the department.

A typical day at work may involve:

  • Managing the workload of content designers, mentoring and supporting direct reports
  • Project managing publishing requests from providing initial advice to officials to delivering high-quality content and services on time and on budget
  • Collaborating with project, policy and comms teams to understand their needs, the needs of users, pair write or feedback on content and mark up content to meet deadlines
  • Providing advice on the best ways to ensure that content is accurate, accessible, usable, high quality, timely and user focused
  • Contributing to team and project meetings to ensure that content and services are delivered to deadline, with any blockers removed

Working as part of a small team, you will:

  • Create, write, improve, publish, review and manage content for GOV.UK and digital services and ensure that content is prepared ready to publish at agreed times and dates
  • Provide content suggestions and guidance to service owners that is flexible, pragmatic and considerate of project priorities and limitations
  • Support team members, 2i check their content, provide advice and mentor to improve their content design, plain English and editorial skills
  • Review and act upon user research, user feedback, analytics and other sources of information to ensure that new and updated services and content meets business and user needs
  • Promote and uphold the GOV.UK style guide, Service Manual, plain English principles and editorial best practices for digital services and content
  • Build an understanding of content design and the importance of early engagement with content designers across the department

This will ensure that all online transport content and digital services:

  • Meet the needs of both users and government
  • Are in plain English
  • Comply with GOV.UK style, editorial and service guidelines
  • Are accessible, usable, current, factually correct and discoverable
  • Are published, updated, maintained and retired at agreed times
