Main duties and responsibilities: To assess and evaluate the communication skills of students and to liaise with teammembers. To determine aims and objectives for the development of communication skills for each individual in co-operation with education and therapy colleagues. To co-develop and deliver specialist programmes to enable students to access thecurriculum and achieve their individual learning goals. To select vocabulary and manage the maintenance of low and high tech communicationaids used by individual students and to support and develop students' functional use ofcommunication systems within the school environment. To plan, lead and supervise communication sessions for groups of students. To take a role in the eating and drinking team within own level of competence. Withguidance from dysphagia trained Speech and Language Therapists to identify dysphagia,take case histories, carry out oral assessment, and observe current habitual eating /swallowing practices. To attend meetings as required and liaise closely with all colleagues within theMultidisciplinary Team. To explain the aims and methods of management and involve the individual (whereappropriate) in discussion with parents/ guardians and carers. To act in an advisory capacity on communication and associated skills, as required. To keep up-to-date written student records and personal clinical observalions. To provide an initial assessment for potential new students and write accompanyingreports to establish a baseline and exceptional funding information, with relation to SaLTfor each individual. To provide subsequent progress reports. To plan and prioritise own client workload. To order equipment, as appropriate. To contribute to departmental research and development activities. To propose policy and procedural changes for own specialist area. To fully contribute to the School's quality assurance processes and procedures. To co-supervise the work of assistants and students. To provide clinical support for Speech and Language Therapy Assistants and students. To participate in the delivery of in-house training courses. To become aware of new developments in the field and to participate in the exchange ofideas. To ensure own continuous professional development. To be accountable for own professional actions: not directly supervised, work within codesof practice, professional guidelines and policies. To supervise less experienced therapists, assistants and students, as appropriate.
