Job OverviewWe are seeking a skilled and proactive Gas & Heating Engineer to take responsibility for the weekly and daily planning, maintenance, and servicing of domestic hot and cold-water systems, as well as a range of mechanical systems. This role requires a hands-on professional with strong technical knowledge, the ability to work under pressure, and a commitment to delivering high-quality service.
As a Gas & Heating Engineer, you will:
Independently plan and deliver pre-planned maintenance (PPM) schedules.
Respond promptly and effectively to reactive and emergency maintenance situations.
Diagnose and resolve faults across a range of complex mechanical and building service systems.
Work safely and systematically, ensuring compliance with all site protocols and health & safety standards.
Communicate clearly and professionally with clients and stakeholders—providing updates, answering queries, reporting defects, and keeping them informed during service visits.
Accurately complete all relevant documentation, including inspection reports, maintenance logs, and records of remedial work.
You will need the ability to exercise sound judgment across a wide range of issues, particularly in dynamic or high-pressure scenarios. You will work as part of a skilled and dedicated multidisciplinary team that includes Plumbers, Electricians, Carpenters, Painters, Cleaners, Administrators, and other professionals. Main Duties
Maintain, repair, test, and install a wide range of oil heating and gas engineering systems and equipment across the Defence Estates' fixed plant infrastructure.
You will be responsible for inspecting and testing installed systems, interpreting engineering and building drawings/specifications, and applying a deep understanding of the interaction between mechanical and electrical systems. Your goal will be to ensure all machinery and systems operate within defined parameters and comply with all relevant legal and regulatory standards.
This role requires both planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and responsive/reactive maintenance, performed to a high standard. You will be expected to maintain accurate documentation, respond to call-outs, and operate safely in potentially hazardous environments following policies such as Health and Safety, COSHH, Electricity at Work, Asbestos, and Legionella regulations.
You must liaise confidently with both technical and non-technical staff, contributing to the safe and efficient delivery of engineering services. A professional attitude and consistently high standards of workmanship and service delivery are essential.
Key Responsibilities
-Collaborate with the Technical Supervisor and Chargehands to deliver comprehensive and effective maintenance services.
-Perform reactive maintenance and repairs on a variety of mechanical and heating systems.
-Service and replace common mechanical components, including taps, pumps, valves, and calorifiers.
-Ensure full compliance with safety procedures, regulations, and engineering standards always.
-Contribute to the operational risk register and promote a culture of continuous improvement within the team.
-Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability, with a willingness to undertake tasks outside your core trade following appropriate training.
What we are looking forEssential Qualifications and Experience:
-Background in a Maintenance, Facilities Management, or similar technical environment.
-NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
-Gas Safe registered with valid ACS Gas qualifications.
-Full, clean, and valid UK driving licence.
-Capable of obtaining MoD Basic Security Clearance.
-Experience working with electrical control systems, including PLCs and hardwired systems.
-Strong working knowledge of health and safety legislation and recognised safety procedures.
-IOSH “Working Safely” certification, or willingness to obtain.
-Proven multi-skilled engineering experience with a strong focus on heating and/or gas systems.
-Familiarity with oil-fired industrial and domestic boilers and heating systems.
-Ability to carry out new installation work from written specifications with minimal supervision.
-Comprehensive understanding of building services disciplines, including Heating, Hot water, Ventilation, Refrigeration, Environmental systems and Electrical power/distribution
-Knowledge of Permit to Work systems and safe systems of work.
-Awareness of statutory compliance requirements and building regulations.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience:
-Holds or has held Authorised Person qualifications.
-Unvented hot water qualification and experience with associated systems.
-IOSH or equivalent health and safety qualification.
-Experience working within a Ministry of Defence (MOD) environment.
